Great turnout today at the Ford River and Field Club.

We covered the foundation that must come before real training ever begins —
✔️ Proper handling skills
✔️ Daily management routines
✔️ Using the right tools the right way

If those pieces aren’t in place, obedience becomes frustrating for both dog and owner. But when you get the structure right, training becomes clear and enjoyable. And when it’s clear and enjoyable, it becomes a habit. A way of life. Something you actually look forward to doing each day. That’s when training stops being an “event” and becomes part of your daily routine.

I’m grateful for everyone who showed up ready to learn better ways to live and work with their dogs. We had great questions, great engagement, and a room full of people who genuinely care.

If you have a venue or group that would benefit from something similar — vet clinic, boarding kennel, rescue organization, neighborhood association, private club — I’d be happy to come speak and share practical, real-world dog training principles.

DM me or visit aWesDog.com for more information.

Let’s keep raising the standard of dog training in Savannah.

Today’s session is with Madeline, a towering yet gentle Great Dane learning one of the most underrated—and important—skills in dog training: calmly accepting a belly rub. 💡

This isn’t just affection—it’s training. Teaching a dog to expose their belly builds trust, confidence, and cooperation for real-life situations like vet exams or grooming. In this video, I break down:

✅ How to use marker words (“good,” “nope—try again,” “OK”) for crystal-clear communication
✅ The power of pressure on / pressure off as a training motivator
✅ Why trust-based handling is just as vital as sit, down, or stay
✅ Common mistakes owners make—and how to avoid them

Watch as I guide Madeline through each step, showing how quiet follow-through and proper timing create lasting understanding. Whether you’re training a Great Dane or a small breed, these principles apply to every dog.

River’s morning workout with the flirt pole 🐾🔥
This “toy” is so much more than a game. By keeping the lure moving just out of reach, we build prey drive, focus, and grip strength while teaching River to think and perform in a high state of excitement. Short sessions keep his desire sharp and his confidence growing—perfect groundwork for our future fieldwork.

🚨 INTENSE MOMENT ALERT 🚨
Watch closely—the owner is trying to hold Tex as she thrashes and even looks like she’s biting. In the struggle she slips the collar, slices his arm (yes, he’s bleeding), and still this isn’t true aggression.
This is reactivity—and it can look scary.

Here’s the key:
✅ We use marker words (yes, no, good) to clearly communicate right vs. wrong the instant it happens.
✅ We build food drive & prey drive so the dog learns to work in different states of mind—calm focus and high excitement.
✅ We apply pressure & release fairly so the dog understands how to turn pressure off by making the right choice.

⚡️When you understand these tools—how, when, and why to use them—you can transform chaos into communication and build a stronger relationship with your dog.

River’s Second Lesson (Video Breakdown)

🎯 Key Takeaways from River’s Crate Training Session
👉 In just TWO lessons, River is confidently going into his crate on command. Here’s what we focused on in this video:
• Foundation Skills: Recall & Kennel – two commands that can completely transform life inside your home.
• Marker Timing: Every success was marked with “good,” every refusal with a calm “nope.” Timing is everything in helping the dog understand exactly what earns success.
• Always Follow Through: We never asked River to kennel unless we were ready to make it happen—using the leash or e-collar if needed. Don’t rehearse your dog ignoring you; every word must count and be fair.
• Clear Communication: Leash pressure and e-collar vibration were paired so River understands both mean the same thing, giving his elderly owners a simple, gentle way to reinforce commands.
• Confidence Building: Each repetition grew River’s understanding and enthusiasm—you can literally see his personality brighten as the lesson unfolds.

🐾 River’s Kennel Lesson – Part 2 🐾
In just one lesson, River made huge strides learning to go into his kennel on command—a clear, calm way to show leadership and give this nervous, reactive dog the confidence he needs.

💡 His owners aren’t as mobile, so building a system where they can guide River with simple, consistent cues is key. Even with me training only once a week, the right approach lets River—and his family—make real progress fast.

⚡️ Today you can actually see the shift: River thinking, relaxing, and beginning to follow the leader—something he wants to do.

📹 Part 3 is next! Stay tuned to see if River can overcome these mental barriers and take his training to the next level.

May is a 6-year-old herding dog with strong prey drive.
Her challenge: staying obedient while highly excited.
We used the flirt pole—short, intense sessions that build drive, focus, and bond.
Key tip: never exhaust the dog; always end with them wanting more.
After the game, we practiced stay with real distractions—people, dogs, cars.
Her biggest test: ignoring a tossed ball while following her owner’s commands.
With consistent markers, she ignored the lure and chose her handler.
The takeaway: no matter how tempting the world looks, the handler must always be the most rewarding.

Big dogs, big lessons 🐾

Madeline is a 150lb Great Dane, and lately she’s been pulling on the leash and getting worked up in the car. With a dog this size, little problems can turn big fast.

Here’s the key: training isn’t just about fixing behavior. It’s about teaching a dog how to control their own mind.
✨ Self-discipline on the leash.
✨ Clarity through marker words (yes, good, no).
✨ Responding to the lightest leash pressure, instead of pulling against it.

One big takeaway for Madeline’s owner—if you hold the leash tight out of habit, or always keep the e-collar remote in your hand, the dog notices. They learn to only respond under those conditions. Break the habit, keep your tools consistent (remote in your pocket, leash loose), and communication becomes clear again.

When you teach your dog impulse control, you’re not just solving problems—you’re giving them the skills to choose calmness when the world around them is loud. That’s when training shines.

📍If you’re in the Savannah area, reach out for private lessons. I’d be happy to help you and your dog build this same kind of clarity.

River taught himself something dangerous: panic → slip → freedom. 😬 Every escape made the habit stronger.

Here’s the catch—your dog is always training, whether you guide it or not. Rehearsals build habits. Sometimes that’s chasing birds (fun and useful!). Other times? Panic and flight.

The good news? A little structure flips the script. 🐾 By making escape impossible and rewarding calm choices, River learned a new rule: success comes from calm, not chaos.

Training doesn’t need to be overwhelming. Presence + guidance = the dog you’ve been dreaming of.
