Superficial Thermal Modalities: Heat and Cold Therapy Effects and Uses

Check out this nice article written by a RVT.
Provides some great info!

The only thing we would offer as an additional food for thought, is that there is now evidence against the use of ice in the first 48 hours for soft tissue injury management. (Depends of course on the extent of damage…there are nuances to this), but the biggest take home message and purpose for the infographic in the comments is that the once-accepted RICE approach to soft tissue injury has actually been retracted in the human world by its original investigator and the more recent evidence suggests that it is better to show them some PEACE and LOVE instead.
So early icing has now entered the world of medical controversy in the human world.

Thermotherapy in rehabilitation includes modalities such as whirlpool immersion, cold compression, and more.

Here to say Happy 🌎 Day!

Did you know that Earth Day first started here in Santa Barbara?
It’s true! It was in response to an oil spill in our channel.

Love being at the heart of change.

Loving the opportunities I’ve been given lately to spread the Animal PT love!

This time I was invited to speak to the students of the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Chapman University. 🙌🏼

Love educating the next generation of PTs about my favorite topic—Animal PT and Professional Advocacy in California.

Common sense legislative changes are necessary so DVMs and PTs can work more collaboratively and so consumers have more choice and access to rehab care for their animals.

In it together.

We are all about PEACE ☮️ and LOVE ❤️. (And education 📚).

Did you know Rest Ice Compression Elevation (RICE ) is a thing of the past in the newest research out there?

Research has shown that the ‘new’ approach to soft tissue injury management can be remembered through the acronym PEACE and LOVE (its actually not super new…the research has been out for some time…it’s just that change is hard and it tends to be slow when all of society was taught the same information. What was once the accepted norm, underwent reform, and now we need to re-educate ourselves in light of new information (metaphor not lost on me for larger matters in this world as well).

Check out our infographic and be sure to SAVE it.

The hardest part of this approach for me is that I actually love ice.
So I do still use ice as a pain reliever, but I’m doing it much less and I am not using it with the intent to reduce inflammation.
The other one that catches people off-guard when they read this list is to NOT take anti-inflammatory medications right after injury either. Basically, let it inflame and let your body do its thing. It’s better that way.

Just finished giving a 2 hour webinar to spread the animal rehab love with PT students from all of the California programs.

Appreciate the invitation from @ca_ssig to share my passion.

Hoping to inspire and educate the next generation of PTs to get involved in this exciting career and become advocates for common sense legislative change in California so PTs and DVMs can work together for the benefit of all!

Let’s motivate to legislate so we can all better collaborate!

In it together for the animals and the people who love them! 💪🏼💕🐾

Nice little feature. 🥰

Nice little feature. 🥰

Let me introduce you to Karen Atlas, a colleague, friend, mentor, and partner, if you will, in this canine physical therapy and rehabilitation world. After 20+ years in this field, you can bet I’ve met lots of people, both in person and online. One of these people is Karen Atlas. (I’ve known Karen for a LONG time. I’m pretty sure we first met at a Canine Rehabilitation Institute NeuroRehabilitation course— maybe the one I was teaching when I was weeks pregnant with Siena. Karen’s reply: YES! THAT's right! We were both pregnant ;) )
Karen and I have worked closely together through so many committees, initiatives, and educational programs over the years, including through the Animal Physical Therapy Special Interest Group of the American Physical Therapy Association, the International Association of Veterinary Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy, and the California Animal Physical Therapy Coalition (APTC).
Like Lisa, Karen has TONS of experience, working both in human and pet physical therapy. Over 13 years ago (of her 25 year PT career), she decided to devote her professional life to the treatment of animals after adopting an injured dog and could not find any rehab services as a treatment option. She successfully pioneered the animal physical rehabilitation industry in her region of California and nearly 6 years ago, she opened Atlas Rehabilitation for Canines, the only stand-alone, state of the art facility on the Central Coast. She has built and fostered excellent working relationships with veterinarians and physical therapists in her hometown and around the world. She feels strongly that the best way to advance the profession is through interprofessional collaborative work between her veterinary and physical therapy colleagues. Her experience as a physical therapist in human healthcare has solidified her beliefs that employing the multidiscplinary approach is in the best interest of all people and animals.
I asked Karen to tell me about the one thing that has had the greatest impact on her practice in the past year. “Besides feeling like the hand of God is tangibly guiding my way, I would say the second greatest positive impact has been my amazing team. They are a dedicated, compassionate, competent group who epitomizes teamwork. I have really appreciated their flexibility and diligence to provide the best care possible for our community during these unprecedented times. Needing to adjust to the continuous changes as we navigate the COVID 19 pandemic together has certainly been challenging, but my teams' abilities, attitude and work ethic are unparalleled. Maintaining mental health for myself and my team have come to the forefront and many decisions are made daily to support everyone's physical and mental health."
Though Karen’s practice has been challenged by recent regulations on physical therapy practice in California, she shared that she has learned a lot about her own resiliency and has found value and purpose in the hard times. She’s had her #mindblown by “the support poured out by my community... both by the local veterinarians and by all of our amazing clients! Their collective support and expression of gratitude has helped me and my team stay positive and energized. The amount of unsolicitated support in so many different ways has affirmed and confirmed that the path I am on is the right one. And for that, I am grateful.”

Had the honor and incredible experience to be a Keynote speaker for the UCSF/SFSU Physical Therapy program this morning. (my alma mater! 🥰)

Along with my amazing colleague, @jenjonesdpt, we had the opportunity to share our passion
and demonstrate how our unique education and skill set can be utilized in the treatment of animals.

As a fierce advocate for common-sense legislative change, I was able to share some of the history of California animal healthcare politics, present the challenges we have faced, and provide ways to get involved to create the change we all want to see.

We all want to see more animals get the care they need, where they need it.

But the California Veterinary Medical Board just enacted new regulations that restrains the trade of qualified physical therapists. This means they just made access to rehab care even MORE difficult for California consumers to receive services for their pets. 😡

Awareness is key.
Please follow along and join our next campaign to create new laws in response to the recent changes the Vet Board just made. Their new regulations have now effectively monopolized the animal healthcare industry in favor of the vets.

**Important—NONE of the vets we work with want to be limited in their ability to collaborate with qualified PTs. On the contrary. They all want what’s best for their animal patients. And if what is best is referring them to a qualified animal PT, they want that choice. Makes sense.

Unfortunately, the vet/vet tech associations (I.e politics!) see things differently and have conflicting motives.

Change is needed so more animals can get the care they need. In order to make that happen, common-sense legislation needs to be passed!

Join us and help ‘be the change’ so more animals can be helped.

🦷 Harvey’s PSA! 🦷

It is so important to get dentals (under anesthesia!) by your vet. If your trusted vet makes that recommendation, it would be wise to heed their advice (which is often times yearly for little dogs, like mine). Some may say “nah, it’s just dog teeth, no big deal” or “I’ll just get a non-anesthetic done at the pet store.”

But oral health is so important. And the ONLY way to get under the gum line (where all the nasties live) is when they are anesthetized.

👉🏼Little dogs are really prone to gum disease and they often need extractions because periodontal disease advances so much more quickly for them.

Thank you Dr. Ann for taking such excellent care of my boy. And thank you Cat for loving on him while he was there.

Super happy to report that Harvey didn’t need any extractions this time around! 🙌🏻

Don’t forget to brush your pups teeth! Tartar can build up fast, so it’s important to keep those pearly whites nice and pearly. 🦷

Progress is being made in California!
We still need a legislative remedy to fix the issue, but now everyone will be operating on the same set of facts.

PROGRESS! We are all finally on the same page when it comes to understanding the facts of the issue surrounding qualified PT's working on animals. 👏

The Senate and Assembly Business and Professions Committee consultants hosted a stakeholder’s meeting on Friday, January 28, 2022.
It was a great meeting, with the legislative consultants, CVMA E.D., CVMA lobbyists, CPTA, DVM experts, APTC, APTC lobbyist, VMB E.O, PTB E.O. and the new VMB President all in attendance. This was not a policy meeting, rather it was intended to provide fact-based presentations for all to fully understand the issue.
It was a really productive meeting and served to level the playing field by ensuring we are all understanding the truth of the issue. Going forward we will now all be springboarding from the same set of FACTS.

As you know, if you have been following this issue in California, our opposition was quite unscrupulous with their interpretation of the facts and instead relied on their own 'alternative facts' in their quest to kill the bill in 2018 so they could preserve their monopoly in animal healthcare.
👉Our opposition is now accountable for understanding the real truths about the issue and will not (or should not…) purposefully undermine the solution with misinformation campaigns again.

Here are the key take-away FACTS from Friday's meeting:

1. California is way behind in getting this issue fixed. We have an access to care crisis in vet med, and it has been identified that rehab specifically is in need of a legislative remedy to increase access to consumers.

2. There are a number of other states that have gone before us implementing legislation and regulation (and enforcement) and there have not been any complaints of harm or negligence against a qualified PT. The model is proven safe to increase access to consumers in this way. And the Boards in the other states have not had any issues with implementation of simplified language.

3. The projection of cost to the state to implement the legislative remedy was unnecessarily inflated in 2018 for AB 3013. The $600k for "examination development, information technology, and potential facilities costs to house additional staff" was unnecessary. No other state has done this and it was an unnecessary barrier placed by the VMB at the time.

4. Our opponents of the Animal Physical Rehab bill of 2018 (AB3013) cited risks to animal safety, liability, and felt that the status quo model of care that is in the interest of animals is already in place. During Friday’s meeting, it was shown to be a safe model, the liability can be appropriately placed on the treating licensee, and because the “status quo” has just been changed as of January 1, 2022, it now necessitates the removal of the barriers that were just enacted that made access to care even worse.

Notably, there has been some major changes in leadership as well.
There is a new Executive Officer of the VMB (Jessica Sieferman), a new CVMA Executive Director (Dan Baxter). and a new VMB President (Kathy Bowler--she is a public member and the one who spoke in our latest video. Based on her keen awareness of the issue back in 2017, she felt like the Nevada model really addressed all the VMB's concerns for safety, etc. especially because of the inclusion of the additional training. And we couldn't agree more!).

We are looking forward to coming together to put a solution in place so more animals can get the care they need, where they need it. Consumers want it, DVM's want it, PT's want it...it really is a no-brainer, especially when the facts have now been made crystal clear.

In it together and looking forward to being part of the solution!

Please help in spreading the word about this progress so we can keep the momentum. Like, comment and share away!

**Photo is little Charlie Choo-choo. A sweet guy who was referred by a vet to our Coalition's President (Karen Atlas, a licensed physical therapist and certified in canine rehabilitation) to receive some skilled care. He was a pup in rescue who was paralyzed at the time and after months of treatment, he walked out of the clinic and found his new forever home!
