What was your ridiculously low “magic number” before Chicken Math took over?

For me it was 6! I swore to my husband I'd stop at 6. “We just need fresh eggs and since the kids are grown & moved out 6 will be plenty.”
Now we have 4 coops & runs with anywhere from 20-30 birds per each!

“Your eggs are too expensive”.

It’s something I hear on a regular basis.

You should see the receipts from the breeders I purchased eggs & chicks from to build my lines. You’d fall over. 🤯

Please realize when you purchase eggs & birds from a quality breeder, they have invested thousands and thousands of dollars to get to the point of producing the eggs you want. Not to mention all the time invested in inspections, test hatching, building infrastructure, cleaning, and quality care.

Thank you to all who support my program and those of other small specialized breeders. Thank you for seeing the value in what we do!

35+ chicks that hatched yesterday in Sebastopol, CA at Alchemist Farm & Garden arrived here today in Sandy, Oregon robust & healthy at Little Deuce Coop of Sandy - Oregon!
This was a group order for 6 different crazy chicken ladies like myself to add to our flocks!! I was happy to be the coordinator of chaos!

Our little Popcorn, AKA Poppy, AKA Pops! She’s a soft cull from a dear friend’s Ermine Ameracauna project but you better not tell Pops that! To me, she’s perfect in every way! While she won’t be part of our Ermine breeding project, she’s my chicken soulmate and everything I need right now during a tough life transition.

I have A LOT of chickens and there are only 2 of us with mostly just me (Jen) hatching and brooding the chicks. We have no little hands holding and cuddling our chicks all day. Because we can’t frequently handle all of them, they are tolerant of us and come for hand fed treats but not the cuddly type. Pops on the other hand, came to us at 3 or so weeks old from a beautiful family full of chick cuddling children and I built on her wonderful start in life to continue to foster a relationship of trust with her.

She’s integrated into the big girl flock now and thriving. She’s the ONLY chicken I have ever had that runs up to me just to be picked up and cuddled.

When hatching eggs it’s super common to see chicks pip early but we never talk about what happens when day 21 comes and goes, and there is no sign of life. Thankfully, I know the breeder very well. I know her hatch rate is phenomenal so when day 21 came and went. I knew that these chicks probably just needed a little more time so here we are day 22 and you can see two different eggs tipping and hear one of them so now my job is to sit back and let them do their thing. I wouldn’t have interacted with the eggs until day 23 to check for life thankfully they beat me to it.
