In the wake of this auction and the huge numbers of horses bought by kill pen guys (and gals) it reminds me that changing the law is really the only way to change this system.

Currently, shipping horses to Mexico and Canada for slaughter is completely legal. In fact these guys all do it by the books, signed and stamped by veterinarians and officials. It’s not a secret underground world, it’s currently condoned.

There is a Bill in committee, right now, that would decimate this system if it was passed and change the fate for the thousands upon thousands of horses rescues just can’t get to to help. Info on it is pinned on my page, and see below.

The SAFE act- Save Americas Forgotten Equines

1661 Save America's Forgotten Equines Act of 2025 or the SAFE Act of 2025. This bill permanently prohibits the slaughter of equines (e.g., horses and mules) for human consumption. (Current law prohibits the slaughter of dogs and cats for human consumption. This bill extends the prohibition to equines.)

We’ve just got to do something.

Everyone loves horses. We need to tell our legislators that this matters. That this matters to us. We can be the change if enough people are loud enough.

More to come but ….let’s make some change together

Instead of just doing everything we can within this disaster of a system let’s change the rules to the game.

Humans made the game after all, and we can change it again.

I’ll keep playing the game too in order to keep saving what horses I can, but this system is cruel, and broken and without a change in the law the slaughter pipeline will continue en mass.

Let’s figure out to get the SAFE act out of committee before it dies there

Day 1 of Freedom! Lots more work to go!

04/18/2026

Everyone is settling in nicely and decompressing in our quarantine pen. Now comes the work of rehab: introducing high quality groceries (especially slowly in these skinny ones), vet visit, deworming, vaccines and lots of scratches and treats. Oh and hay, lots of good forage to help get them healthy again.

For this $5 Friday please consider donating to help pay for their bale fees yesterday and all the good stuff that needs to come their way in the coming weeks!

We need to get a load of hay this weekend, vet day is next week and the bills will start pilling in.

Please consider helping us help these guys! We’ve got them out of there, now let’s get them happy, healthy and to a forever home

Is anyone open to foster something from the auction?

I would love for this rescue to have a network of fosters so that we could save so many more than I can fit on our little property.

With a big network of willing and able people we could really make an impact and have places for these guys to land until they find their forever homes.

It takes a special person to foster a horse, but it is so rewarding to know you saved a life.

I’ve pulled everything I can from this auction, but it happens again at an even bigger scale in the fall (when everyone dumps anything they don’t want to pay to feed for the winter). And there are so many more auctions. With a big network of people we could really made a difference!

Details about our foster program are on our website.

Can you believe this is the same horse?

The auction makes horses look insane, especially young, naturally high strung horses. This was NOT his fault. Thank god we were there for him.

We are getting to the last ?200? Horses so my guess is that prices will start to drop and we start to see a lot more at risk going to slaughter. Luckily the prices have mostly been higher today, but I was told that they have a lot of flexibility in buying today, that the buyers in Mexico take anything he’ll bring from the Midwest. I think the safe price is probably around 1800 or 2000 for draft sizes.
