Which animals have you planted String of Turtles plant in with and had good results?

String of Turtles (Peperomia prostrata) is a slow-growing, vining plant that's perfect for medium to high humidity bioactive enclosures. It thrives in bright, indirect light with temperatures between 65–80°F and humidity levels around 50–80%. Safe for reptiles, amphibians, and mammals, this is a non-toxic species!!! If you plant it up high in an enclosure it will trail and create additional hides with it leaves- how cool! It is ideal for enclosures housing species like crested geckos, dart frogs, tree frogs, or mourning geckos, and many more! 🐢

These little guys know how to make themselves at home!
This group of isopods found the perfect hangout spot in a dried lotus seed pod, nestled into one of our bioactive enclosures. These Lotus pods don’t just look cool—they provide shelter, are a tasty treat, hold humidity, and slowly break down over time to feed the soil and keep your ecosystem thriving.

Enrichment like this encourages natural behaviors in your isopods and makes your setup that much more functional (and fun to watch!).

These Lotus Pods and other types of pods are available on the website. Isopods too!

Did you know that we cut our mesh barriers about 6" larger than you will need?

Some bioactive post and videos I've seen have recently have cut the mesh barrier to fit the enclosure perfectly, lying flat on top of the drainage layer. It looks nice, but I don't recommend it. I prefer to offer a larger mesh barrier and recommend customers use it like a substrate cup. This way if you accidently flood your enclosure ( I have also done this too!) you are able to grab one corner of the mesh barrier and use a turkey baster to suck the excess water out before it has a chance to sit with the substrate creating an situation where bad bacteria can grow. When that happens your only option is to remove the substrate and start all over- best to have the ability to fix it and save some money on substrate.

We offer these mesh barriers for sale on our website in 8x8, 12x12, 18x18 10 gallon, 20 gallon, and 40 gallon sizes.

Supervised outside time is a nice way to enrich your snakes life and get them some all natural UVB! This is Eliza, she is our 16 year old Boa Constrictor. She is a great snake! She has a mellow attitude and doesn't get into a ton of mischief outside probably because we are keeping a close eye on her during her "walk". She tongue flicks constantly to help her choose where to go, so I know she is into it. I do make sure we are in an area that I have checked out for safety. If it is an area where I have routinely seen wild type snakes or lizards- we're not going there! If I see any holes or anywhere she can get where I can't grab or see part of her- we're not going there! I also check the sky- she is a big 11 ft snake but we don't want any flying predators to get a wild ideas!

Do you take your snakes for walks?

One quality of ground covers like Ficus pumila ‘Quercifolia’ (Oak Leaf Creeping Fig) is to help maintain humidity levels, create hiding areas for prey items, creating a ‘tucked away’ good feeling, and looks really good! This tiny-leaved, oak-shaped fig is non-toxic and safe for most reptiles and amphibians, including dart frogs, day geckos, and isopods. It thrives in very humid conditions, appreciating bright, indirect light and consistently moist soil.
Its dense mat-like growth hugs hardscape and substrate, softening enclosure lines while creating safe travel zones for microfauna- like a super tiny highway. Add texture, function, and foliage all in one. Find this and other vivarium-friendly plants now at bioactivesupply.com—grown with your ecosystems in mind.

Did you know that blue poison dart frogs (Dendrobates tinctorius “azureus”) absorb water directly through their skin? This makes consistent humidity not just important—but essential to their health and hydration. These frogs thrive in rainforest-style enclosures with dense foliage, moist leaf litter, and natural hides like coco huts or cork bark.
Pairing them with humidity-loving plants like Solanum Ecuador (seen here) creates a lush, functional environment that supports both animal and plant health. Looking to build a thriving dart frog habitat? Find substrates, plants, enclosure decor, and the clean up crew that make setups like this possible at bioactivesupply.com.
