Lots of exciting things are happening here at Shelby’s!
Muk and Toby are doing great! They’ve been settled long enough for their personalities to really shine. They were both surprisingly easy to begin with, considering size and breed.
To think, it all started with saving Molly. If she hasn’t found her adopter yet, I know she will!
We’ve been working on everything from assembling raised beds (and finding out which ones hold up and which don’t), continued assessment of safety issues and protocols, to weatherizing everything, figuring out city and county council schedules, and working on getting some fundraising going, with some minor car maintenance in between.
One thing is certain, Muk and Toby both love their bones and time basking in the sun.
(The puffer jacket has been a hit, too, though unneeded once the morning chill subsided)

Excellent with handler.
Muk just needs someone who can handle his size and occasional stubborn streak. He would excel with training. He can be fun and playful, but really wants to be a sofa dog in a home where he doesn’t have to share the limelight with other dogs or cats. We’ll certainly be sharing more about him!

🚨 Please Help!! ‼️: every like, reaction and share does wonders 🐕💜
Muk, the Marvelous (possibly misidentified as) Mastiff mix ( # A1234167) needs a lifeline!!
We need a rescue or immediate foster with no other animals.
He’s truly a marvelous fella, a real people dog, who doesn’t quite know his size (approx 80 lbs). For unknown reasons, he is not compatible with other dogs or animals.
Muk is 4 yrs old, completely housebroken, neutered, and has a nice, mild energy level for his suspected breeds. We strongly believe he would excel with some training and a loving person or family with a decent sized yard or place for walks.

We can only speak from our experiences with him from Streets of Bakersfield Doggy Days out and as fosters, but temporary foster mom believes he has so much potential, lots of life to live and love to give. He’s good with kids, good on leash, though enjoys walks so much that he’s a bit stubborn coming back in the gate. He’s great with positive reenforcement!

He was picked up back in October in a nice/older established neighborhood, and saved from euthanasia, thanks to a team of staff and volunteers in early Dec. His behavior suggests he was a pet who got out. He enjoys getting some indoor time, and doesn’t rush the door. He’s learning to feel safe and secure being separated from his handler. Unfortunately, though, he is still reactive to other animals.
Please spread the word!
Thank you, and blessings for the new year!!

Did your holiday plans fall through? Wanna hang out with a dog for a day or a week?

We're holding a BONUS Holiday Streets of Bakersfield this Saturday, December 27th! Pick-ups are from 10am to Noon.

We have 2 options:

1. Saturday-only outing. Bring the dog back on Saturday by 3:30pm.
2. Week-long outing while the shelter is closed next week. Bring the dog back on January 2nd.

We may not have many volunteers available to help pull dogs, but we will do our best!

The dogs that go out will benefit by being out of the shelter, and even the dogs who stay in the shelter will benefit from a calmer and more stress-free environment!
