Street Outreach Services and Veterinary Street Outreach Services

Street Outreach Services and Veterinary Street Outreach Services SOS & Vet SOS are innovative outreach services of the San Francisco Community Clinic Consortium which address the unique problems of homeless individuals.

Traveling in a medical van to sites throughout San Francisco, the dedicated SOS team of doctors, nurses, outreach workers, and volunteers creates “clinics without walls” at soup kitchens, on city streets, under freeway overpasses, and in parks. By going directly to homeless people - meeting them on their own turf - the SOS team builds relationships of trust, and breaks down the barriers that keep

homeless people from the care they need and deserve. SOS provides on-site preventive and urgent health care, connection to a medical home for long-term primary care, linkage to other resources (mental health, substance recovery, dental services, legal support, etc.), assistance with housing and benefits applications, distribution of health and hygiene supplies, and transportation assistance to over a thousand homeless San Franciscans every year. VET SOS services are provided by volunteer veterinarians and veterinary technicians through the use of a specially equipped mobile outreach van. VET SOS provides veterinary exams, basic veterinary procedures, vaccinations, referrals & transportation for free spay/neuter surgery, information about service animals in rental housing and responsible pet ownership, and health care information & referrals to their homeless humans. VET SOS uses a specially outfitted van to provide its outreach and veterinary services in selected areas of San Francisco that are inhabited by homeless individuals with companion animals.

Our Vet SOS van isn’t just for getting pop-up veterinary services from point A to B — it’s also equipped with a foldable exam table, giving us a quiet, contained space to care for cats wherever they are🚐🐾. We don’t see as many cats as dogs, but when we do, we make sure
they feel safe, calm, and cared for within the safety of our trusty van🐈‍⬛✨.

Our SOS team is proud to partner with .institute for monthly, pop-up health fairs serving unhoused people on San Francisco’s southeast side! This month, Felton hosted a “Rodeo Round Up” 🤠 at their Bayview Drop-In Center, complete with music, food, games,
and prizes. Alongside the fun, SOS provided urgent medical services and referrals to free veterinary care through our Vet SOS program. We’re so grateful for our amazing partnerships, like with Felton, that help us bring care and resources directly to the unhoused community. 🚐✨🩺💙

Clean & Cool: Our Summer Supplies Drive is Here! ☀️

As summer kicks off, it’s the perfect time to clean out your closet and help someone in need. Our SOS program collects gently used clothes and sneakers, new hygiene products, and non-perishable food items to support unhoused patients during the warmer (or
foggier) months. 👚👖🧦👟

Your unused items can help our patients meet some of their basic needs! Please see our flyer for details on items we can accept for donation & email us to schedule a drop-off, mail items directly, or shop from our Amazon wishlist. ✨🚐

Thank you! 💙

Did you know our SOS medical van has gone through quite the glow-up? ✨

Back in 1988, when SFCCC was among the first in the nation’s Healthcare for Homeless programs & our SOS program first began, our original van, affectionately known as “Little Blue”, was just that: a simple van. It didn’t have an exam room or much space but was
packed with heart. The original SOS team loaded it with donated medical supplies and hit the road to care for unhoused neighbors across the city. 🚙

Then, in 2004, SOS purchased a new van dubbed “Big Blue” that offered more room for patients, supplies, and services, while “Little Blue” retired from human health care and became our first Vet SOS van. 🚐🐾

“Big Blue” served the SOS unhoused community faithfully for 17 years before retiring in 2021 when our current SOS van, “Great White”, rolled onto the scene. With even more space, new equipment, and cloud-based electronic health records, GW helps us reach
more patients than ever while honoring the same legacy of compassionate care as its predecessors.

From humble beginnings to a full-service mobile clinic on wheels, our vehicles and programs have come a long way. We’ve grown and changed over the years, but our commitment to providing essential care to those who need it most remains just as strong. 🚐💙✨🩺

A big shoutout to the members of SFCCC’s National Health Corps Americorps program! 👏🏾🥳

Over the past 46 weeks, they’ve each dedicated more than 1,700 hours of direct service in community health settings- including helping our SOS program assemble hundreds of hygiene kits for unhoused patients. We’re so grateful for their support and wish them the best as they prepare to graduate from AmeriCorps and pursue future endeavors! 💙🚐🩺⚕️

Our team of speakers had an amazing time at this year’s Health Care for the Homeless Conference in Baltimore, MD ✨! It was inspiring to connect with organizations doing similar work, providing medical care not only to unhoused individuals, but also veterinary care to their beloved companion animals.🐾🩺

We’re grateful for the opportunity to share our successes and challenges, and to learn alongside so many dedicated service providers from across the country. A special thank you to Kerrington, one of our speakers, for sharing his lived experience and highlighting just how impactful programs like ours can be.🩵

Meet Toni! ✨

Toni is a long-time patient of both our SOS and Vet SOS programs. A few years ago, she found her oldest dog, Dutchess, abandoned in a dumpster. Determined to care for her new companion, Toni began searching for help to get Dutchess vaccinated and learned about our services from a friend at a local soup kitchen.

Since then, our SOS and Vet SOS teams have supported Toni and her now 3 pups, Dutchess, Peanut Butter, and Jelly, with consistent, compassionate care. Toni says she was especially grateful for our support when Jelly went missing for a few days: “You all kept checking in on me. You looked out for Jelly during outreach and made sure I was okay until we were reunited. That meant so much.” 🐾💕🦮

Toni’s story is a powerful example of how deeply connected people are to their pets, and how important it is that we care for them both. 🚐🩺🐾
