This gorgeous planted viv is going to its new home this weekend! 🀩

I started this build back in July, and it's really grown into a beautiful setup. Fully stocked with isopods, springtails, and other beneficial microfauna, this vivarium will be long-lived and perfect for its new occupants.

Not only is this build full of healthy greenery like Pothos, dracaena, and faery fern, but it is also being sold as a full setup including UVB, heat, AND automated misting system!

Once this viv is out I'll be open for another terrarium or vivarium build, including customs for SD locals - email me if you're interested in filling that slot πŸ€™

PS: I always have 2-3 available "slots" for custom-built terrariums under 12" x 12" x 12", some of which can be sh1pped. I primarily work with bioactive enclosures, planted or otherwise, and have the most experience with tropical climates.

It's not a quality photo but it is a quality species!

This is P. dilatatus, also known as the Giant Canyon isopod. These guys are native to the southwestern US and spend most of their time in deep grasses and creeksides, and are notorious for squeezing into the tiniest crevices πŸ₯΄

I absolutely love this species, and I feel like they're extremely underrated! Not only do they make a great clean up crew due to their tendency to stay underground, but they're also fascinating to watch as display pets.

I've found that transparent bins and terrariums are the best way to house this species - you can watch their underground lives right through the sides! Plus, they'll all wiggle their way above ground in just a few minutes if you toss some dried insects, fish flakes, or Repashy in their enclosures!

The only downside I've ever found with this species is that they'll totally wreck your plants, ESPECIALLY moss. I had originally set up a beautiful display terrarium for 10 individuals, and by the time they hit 30+ and needed to be rehoused the whole setup was a mess! If you're primarily using faux plants or don't mind a... remodel... then the Giant Canyon might be right for you 😁

Dealing with a mold outbreak? Send in an army of springtails and you'll be all set!

Whether you keep reptiles or invertebrates, a colony of springtails will pay for themselves. I primarily use temperate white springtails in my enclosures as they're the most affordable and regularly available springtail species in the hobby.

These critters can live alongside isopods, millipedes, beetles, spiders, scorpions, and more without harming their housemates. Plus, combining them with isopods in a bioactive can and will keep mold, fungus, and waste buildup at bay!

Definitely don't hesitate to grab an 8-ounce culture (approx. 75 individuals) and some Colony Booster on my shop page to give your terrarium or vivarium a kickstart and knock out mold growth in just a few days πŸ™Œ

Check out my easy 6qt bin setup for a 50+ Dairy Cow colony!

With some substrate, moss, leaf litter, and one of the modified 6-quart bin enclosures on my website (coming soon!), it's quick & easy to put together a bin to house any average-sized isopod species in groups as large as 70-80 individuals.

Here I added plenty of fluffy sphagnum moss for the isopods as well as a ceramic hide and a barn feeder from EarthlyExotics, giving the pods multiple options for hiding, eating, and dropping broods!

Dairy Cows make great pets or feeder insects and can be used as clean-up crews in just about any climate - just be sure your other inhabitants can easily escape the pods and aren't soft bodied (ie. millipedes, terrestrial frogs) so they don't get snacked on by these protein hungry creatures πŸ˜…

Be sure to give my IG and FB a follow to be one of the first to see the new website when it drops! πŸ™Œ

If you haven't kept Panda King isopods, you're missing out!

Not only do Pandas have adorable coloring, they're also relatively easy to care for and start reproducing quickly once they're settled in.

These isopods spend the majority of their time huddling under cork bark and other slightly elevated hides, so they may not be the best option for display terrariums until your colony numbers reach 20-30 individuals!

Surprisingly, many hobbyists have found success keeping this species as a clean up crew! Alongside springtails, these little pods can take care of the waste and mold buildup in any vivarium or terrarium.

Whether you're brand new to isopods or a seasoned keeper, I'd definitely recommend adding this species to your collection! 🐼
