It’s been quite a while since we’ve done an update on Salty and he deserves some glowing reviews. Salty hot dumped on us years ago when we offered to help his owner with getting him more “manageable”. We made it very clear we couldn’t “fix” him but felt confident he was a dog that could become safe with proper management. Despite our success his owner refused to take him back and said she could have the humane society pick him up. Having a dog in our rescue with a bite history was something we absolutely didn’t want and had always been very clear about but his owners solution was completely unacceptable and here we are. We’ve successful in managing his behaviors but let’s be real we all hope for a dog we can cuddle on and love. From the beginning I was always able to walk salty and he was always very compliant when asked to go to his crate or come inside and getting him to take these directions made management easy. Somewhere along the line he started to allow me to pet him but picking him up was a different story. He was slowly introduced to our packwalks and absolutely loves them and solicits attention from others and excitedly takes treats and performs all kinds of tricks for treats. It took about 2 years for me to be able to pick him up and it started by him allowing me to help him get in and out of the car. I basically picked him up and put him right down. However this was a turning point as I started taking a few steps with him before putting him down and gradually increased the distance each time. During this time period things started to shift with him. From the beginning he always preferred the company of the other dogs to any human. However, I started to notice that his excitement to run out and play with the other dogs slowly became replaced with his desire to spend time with me. Now after 3-4 years of a life managed by going from the crate to playgroups back to the crate he’s liar in the house when my daughter isn’t home and sleeps with me and several other pups each night. He has learned he loves to cuddle and can’t remember why he was initially so adverse to it. Outside of the home he’s pretty much open (cont. in comment’s)

We are very saddened to learn Chester is not working out in his new home. Chester was never a part of our rescue but we did help his owner network him and find his current adopter. The initial agreement was if things didn’t work out she’d take him back and we’d continue helping her as much as we can. Unfortunately, as her cancer has progressed she is depending on a caregiver herself and lives in an apartment without a yard making taking him back not immediately possible. We’ve been in touch with the adopter and explained this but are very concerned for Chester as we don’t feel any dog should remain in a home where they are not wanted. So we are resharing his original post in hopes of helping him find a safe landing once again. Because Chester was never in our rescue we don’t know much about him. It’s our understanding the adoption isn’t working out due to an incident with another dog in the home. However, according to his original owner he was always dog friendly and used to frequent dog parks when she wasn’t sick. During his time with his adopter he was boarded over the holidays with a local trainer who we are happy to put any interested parties in touch with to gain more insight about Chester’s temperament and disposition. We are also happy to put any interested parties in direct contact with his current adopters should someone out there be interested in giving him a forever home.

The transformation in both Luna and Salty is seriously like night and day. Both of these dogs are ones that came in with huge aversions to strangers. Our pack walks have really helped them get to the next level as they literally run to our guests now in excitement and soliciting attention and affection. Where we have gotten them to where they are wonderful in public they are still not fans of strangers in the home. They both are so ready for a home of their own and have waited so long but need a home that’s low traffic and willing to put them away when guests come over. On a good note they are crate trained and love their crate but them both also have impeccable house manners and don’t need a crate and would be fine putting them in bedroom when guests are over. They are both solidly housebroken with lie to med energy and are great with just a couple walks a day. Please reach out if you are interested in adopting or consider sharing our post for other eyes to see as they are our two longest term residents and it’s time to give the same opportunity they had to other dogs in need.

Updates like this mean the world to us and are a reminder of why we continue on this selfless journey. Moana was rescued from the Bonita shelter in 2020 after she was relinquished with a broken leg that was never addressed and healed incorrectly. Because of those of you that have supported us throughout the years she was able to get the care she needed and is now living the life in San Francisco. To all of those that have donated, fostered, networked and volunteered over the years we want to thank you for making what we do possible.

Ranger is Australian Shepherd turned up to 11. Athletic and energetic? He’ll wow you with his speed and agility. Attentive and loyal? Ranger is the prototypical “Velcro Aussie” and craves connection and guidance from his people. Wariness of strangers? Ranger is slow to warm up to new people and requires careful and deliberate introductions.

Once he is comfortable, Ranger is as sweet, silly, loving, and affectionate as can be. He loves snuggling into trusted people and never wanders far. He enjoys playing with the herding ball, hiking with his foster siblings, and running. He’s smart and very food motivated so picking up new commands is a breeze.

Ranger will do best in a home prepared to meet his exercise and enrichment needs. He’ll need ongoing training and socialization to help him continue to build confidence. Having a confident dog in the home to play with would be a huge help.

Pablo, who will always be our sweet Bello, just celebrated his 5th birthday. He was originally relinquished to us at 10 months and was said to have aggression issues. He was actually the sweetest boy ever but didn’t want to be outside as neo’s are Velcro dogs and bond intensely with their people. I wanted to keep this boy so bad but then got one of those dream applications in for him and had to remind myself love isn’t ownership but wanting the absolute best for the one you love.

Happy Birthday Pablo, you big lug. Sending big kisses to that smooshy face of yours.
