For those who ask what we feed and what we recommend- for our personal dogs we continue to feed Pawtree and the proof of “why” is exemplified in these photos. The HEALTH of our dogs shines in all aspects on this food. His coat, his muscling, his Gastro health, his energy to perform- on this particular dog maintained on just 2 cups of food per day! No supplements, no add ins, and no bath before these photos. Just quality, nutrient dense food.

We could not be PROUDER to share that Taylor Melnar and FTBF Oscar WON the inaugural Bob White Battle at Dying Breed this morning 🤩🤩 with 3 quail pointed shot and retrieved to hand in under 4 minutes!

Oscar has been Taylor’s number one guide dog for 4 years, and a labor of family love in all our successes. I’m so proud of his training- he showed it to perfection today in the field. He is more than deserving of this spotlight, as is Taylor for his marksmanship (one shell per bird!!!)

While the prize money is a wonderful bonus, the chance for these boys to shine doing what they do for our training, our dogs and our clients daily makes my heart beyond happy.

Huge thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make today happen!

Early and APPROPRIATE exposure is important for successful bird dog development.

Keeping realistic expectation is very important when setting training goals for your young dogs! Starting early exposure with positive associations can give you great ideas on natural ability, strengths and weaknesses, biddability and recovery from startles.

We will resume young dog “puppy walks” next fall when temperatures and scenting are ideal for young, inexperienced dogs

In the meantime, we’ll continue training all summer long with various opportunities for development 🐾🩷

Our job is to LEARN them, and TEACH you!

Truly having an UNDERSTANDING of your dog as an individual (strengths, weaknesses, motivators, response to correction or redirection) is the key component to success in your home.

Every dog is different, and there is no one “right” way to train. The second you embrace that philosophy is the second your world open to endless possibilities to meet your goals.

Teaching them through exposure and creating consistency pays off!

Dogs learn EVERYTHING through association- everything you do, that happens in the environment, the stimulus created all either reinforces or discourages behavior.

While Bear has had a natural flash point since he was 8 weeks old, this longer point at 5 months and understanding of the scent cone has developed with exposure to live birds- not by training a formal “whoa.”

The birds have taught him, I have taught him through exposure how to play the game, and we’ll introduce more formal obedience when he is mentally more mature and ready to hunt and compete.

Katy Prairie Pointers genetics for biddability and natural versatility (he points and retrieves at 5 months) shine bright in this pup and we are grateful to show through him just how much development can serve as the best avenue to successful dog training in all aspects!

It’s been a long while since I’ve shared this but I’m reposting again because it’s VITALLY important to know that it’s absolutely ok and normal for your dog to not like every dog it encounters!

Taking the time to learn and understand your dog will create so much more success than trying to force your dog into the wants/needs/ideas you have of what they SHOULD be.

While genetics are helpful component of reasonable expectation, what’s true for most of one type of dog isn’t true for all.

Saved by Deuce’s Dream Hunting Dog Sanctuary off a plea post from a shelter in North Texas, this beautiful girl is too young and not full GSP to belong in a senior sanctuary.

Estimated at 3 years old, she is a likely GSP heeler mix. We have done her initial 30 days of meds plus a proheart injection for heart worms, we’ve healed her broken foot and started basic obedience with her.

She is extremely social with people and dogs, very smart and biddable and in general just a pleasure to be around.

If anyone is interested in meeting, fostering or adopting her, please reach out to us! She IS currently in our home and in training!
