Have you ever seen little bubbles in your sand bed and panicked?

Don't worry, they're totally fine and normal! The bubbles you see are actually a product of the nitrogen cycle, the last product technically, part of the "denitrification" step. I'll spare you all the boring details of the nitrogen cycle, but in short it's: Fish Poop>>Ammonia>>Nitrite>>Nitrate>>Nitrogen Gas.
All of which are toxic to fish and invertebrates at certain levels. The most common way of removing nitrates is by routine water changes. However, sometimes your tank, specifically reef tanks or tanks with deep sand beds, grow certain types of anaerobic(oxygenless) bacteria to eat up and process the nitrates. The bacteria then uses the nitrate to produce various nitrogen-based gases which are then released slowly overtime by either turning the sand or sand sifting creatures such as conchs, snails, and starfish.

Crazy transformation Tuesday for my girl Petal! The first picture is only from about 3 months ago, the second is from a week or so ago. She doesn't even look like the same bluegill!
