Critically Diverse Elevating Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in veterinary medicine
All are welcome here ❤️ Our goal is to:

1.

Veterinary medicine is one of the least racially diverse professions in the United States. The veterinary population is 86% white, 5% hispanic, 3% black and 3% other. Although 65% of veterinarians are female there continues to be a significant gender pay gap. It is evident that we can no longer ignore the inequalities and struggles that minorities face in our profession. We must actively participa

te in bridging the gap on inequality, supporting the minorities amongst our ranks and creating a safe haven where diversity can flourish, be embraced and celebrated. Inspire and encourage underrepresented populations/identities as members of ACVECC and in veterinary medicine as a whole.

2. Create a safe environment in which to engage in conversations around race, diversity, and equity.

3. Promote diversity and inclusion education and resources regarding anti-racist, LGBTQIA, women's rights, religious and disability justice education.

4. Create an environment where people feel safe, heard, valued, and respected.

Martin Luther King Jr. didn’t ask for unity at the expense of justice.

He warned us about it.

We often say we want peace, harmony, or unity at work, in organizations, in communities. But when those words are used to shut down hard conversations, they stop being neutral. They become tools that protect comfort over change.

Discomfort is not failure.

Discomfort is data.

Action steps you can take today:
• When a DEI conversation feels “too much,” pause before shutting it down
• Ask whose comfort is being prioritized in that moment
• Notice who is asked to soften their tone, and who is not
• Stop equating discomfort with harm
• Make room for conversations that don’t resolve neatly

Unity that avoids discomfort isn’t unity. It’s silence with better branding.

MLK Day is not about quoting dreams.

It’s about honoring the courage to sit in the uncomfortable work that real justice requires.

AI is changing everything.

But it isn’t weightless.

Behind every prompt are data centers that use real electricity, real water, and generate real heat. Where those centers are built, how they’re powered, and who absorbs the environmental cost is not random.

Across the U.S., AI infrastructure often clusters in communities already facing higher heat burden, water stress, and pollution. Black and Brown neighborhoods are more likely to carry those cumulative impacts, while being underrepresented in the industries shaping this technology.

This is where DEI, climate, and technology intersect.
Equity-focused AI isn’t anti-innovation. It asks better questions:

Who benefits?
Who bears the cost?
Who gets to decide?

It also includes us, as users. How we use AI matters. Fewer clicks, clearer prompts, and intentional use reduce unnecessary load at scale.

Sustainability isn’t about NEVER using AI. It’s about using it thoughtfully.

Progress that requires silence from the most affected communities isn’t progress.

Learn. Question. Build better.

“If you’ve ever worked alongside a foreign-trained vet who wasn’t called ‘doctor’, this article is for you.”

At Critically Diverse, we believe that diversity isn’t just about who’s in the room. It’s about who gets recognized, supported, and given a real path forward.

In veterinary medicine, immigrant professionals often come with years of experience, deep clinical knowledge, multilingual skills, and a global perspective. But they’re still navigating systems that undervalue them. Many start over as techs or assistants, manage legal hurdles, and pay tens of thousands of dollars just to re-earn their seat at the table.

This new article, published in Today’s Veterinary Practice, breaks down:

🔎 The differences between ECFVG and PAVE
💰 The emotional and financial toll of credentialing
📋 Practical tools clinics can implement today
📢 Why advocacy around licensing, immigration, and inclusion cannot wait

We hope this piece creates awareness and action. Whether you’re a clinic leader, a colleague, or an immigrant vet yourself, you have a role to play.

We’re excited to reveal our new logo!

A symbol of who we are, who we serve, and where we’re going.

It captures everything we stand for:
🌈 Radical inclusivity
⚡ Critical urgency
🫀 The heartbeat of change

The Progress Pride rainbow honors all identities, especially those historically erased in veterinary medicine.

The ECG complex embedded in the “iti" of Critically reminds us that we show up in urgent spaces where every second matters and every life holds value.

We chose fonts that reflect the balance we navigate daily: the boldness to stand up for what’s right, and the clarity and structure to sustain this work with intention.

This is more than a logo.
It’s a signal.
A call.
A community.

💬 Tell us, what does being Critically Diverse mean to you?
What does it look like to live at the intersection of care and justice?
What do you think of our new logo?

Change is part of growth.

After thoughtful reflection and ongoing dialogue, Critically Diverse is becoming an INDEPENDENT organization, continuing its mission to create inclusive learning spaces and accessible DEI education within veterinary medicine.

We remain deeply grateful for the partnerships with ACVECC where Critically Diverse was born and VECCS through their DEI committee merger and we look forward to continuing to collaborate across the veterinary field as we expand our educational impact.

This step allows us to continue doing what we do best, advocating boldly for equity, representation, and justice within veterinary medicine, especially for those whose voices have too often been left out of the conversation.

Our mission remains the same: to create space where all veterinary professionals can feel seen, supported, and empowered to lead change.

We’re grateful for the foundation that allowed Critically Diverse to take root, and now, we’re ready to keep growing in ways that meet the needs of this moment and the people who need it most.

Because DEI work isn’t about comfort, it’s about courage.
And silence was never our language.

Stay tuned for what’s next, our community is just getting started. 🌿

Most people have never heard of the ECFVG… but it decides which foreign vets get to work in the U.S. 🩺

For foreign-trained vets, the ECFVG pathway includes an English Proficiency Exam, BCSE, NAVLE, and the multi-day Clinical Proficiency Exam (CPE).

💰 The full process used to cost $10,000–$12,000 total. Starting in 2026, that number could exceed $20,000–$25,000… with the CPE alone jumping from $7-8k to $12,804, and retakes rising from $1,500 to $4,571.

And it’s not just for new applicants, these price increases also affect veterinarians already enrolled in the program, many of whom have already invested a large amount of money, time, effort and planning for years.

Add travel, study costs, and the newly proposed H-1B visa fees take may increase up to $100,000 (from $6k), and many international vets will simply be priced out.

By 2032, the U.S. will be 17,000 veterinarians short; yet we’re making entry harder for the very professionals who could help fill that gap.

Many are women, immigrants, and professionals of color who bring essential skills and perspectives our field needs.

🌿 Honoring Dr. Jane Goodall: A Legacy of Empathy, Equity & Connection 🌿

Today we celebrate Dr. Jane Goodall, not just as a pioneering primatologist and conservationist, but as a model for inclusive leadership, compassionate activism, and relational thinking.

🌍 Why her work reflects DEI values:
✨ Every individual matters, whether human or nonhuman
✨ Listening to silenced voices challenges hierarchies
✨ Programs like Roots & Shoots empower youth across cultures and experiences

🗣️ Her wisdom still guides us:

“What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”

“Only if we understand, can we care. Only if we care, we will help. Only if we help, we shall be saved.”

“Change happens by listening and then starting a dialogue with the people who are doing something you don’t believe is right.”

✨ DEI lessons from Jane Goodall:
• Center voices often marginalized
• Recognize that environmental justice, human rights, and biodiversity are interconnected
• Lead with humility, empathy, and hope

Let’s honor her not just in words, but in action:
🌱 Amplify diverse voices
🌱 Build bridges across difference
🌱 Take small actions daily that ripple outward

✨ Veterinary medicine is stronger when we all embrace Latinx culture ✨

At IVECCS 2025 in San Diego, we didn’t just celebrate Latinx Pride, we shared tools to make our profession more inclusive, equitable, and just. Because when language and culture are respected, trust grows, care improves, and comunidad thrives. 🐾🌎

That’s why we created FREE bilingual resources (link in bio):

💵 A veterinary financing guide in English + Español, showing which institutions require SSN/TIN and which don’t

🗣️ Common Spanish phrases for front desk, nurses, and doctors—porque el idioma importa

✅ A Latinx Cultural Humility Checklist to help your hospital see where it can grow

These resources aren’t only for Latinx professionals or clients, son para todos. Inclusion means all of us doing the work, learning, and showing up.

This is more than representation. It’s acción. It’s orgullo. It’s justicia.

🗣️✨ Freedom of speech is power… but it’s also fragile.

The First Amendment was never a gift. It was demanded by the people to protect dissent, protest, and the right to challenge power. From the Bill of Rights in 1791 to the Civil Rights marches of the 1960s, progress has always depended on voices that refused to be silenced.

But today, those protections are under threat:
⚠️ Media outlets face government pressure for critical coverage.
⚠️ Universities risk funding cuts for teaching DEI, race, and gender studies.
⚠️ Immigrant students and scholars are silenced for political speech.
⚠️ Public broadcasters like NPR and PBS face defunding.
⚠️ Vague laws expand government control over who gets to speak.

👉 Hate speech may still hide behind “free speech,” but the real danger is when justice speech, the voices of marginalized communities, activists, educators, and truth-tellers, is targeted.

✨ Our history shows that rights are never handed down. They’re demanded, defended, and lived.

🔊 Use your voice. Speak out. Protect the power of speech before it slips away.

🌸💀✨ DEI Happy Hour @ IVECCS 2025 ✨💀🌸

In the middle of the chaos of conference life, we all need a place to exhale. A place where every voice matters, where identity is celebrated, and where we can show up fully as ourselves.

That’s what this happy hour is about: building a safe space, finding your people, and creating community that lasts long after the sessions end. 💜

🍹 Drink tickets will be given to those who attend Session 665—because learning is better with connection.
