I haven’t posted recently because I’ve been procrastinating over this post, it’s a rough one. A big grateful thank you to the pet parent who agreed to let me post this. ❤️
I had the pleasure of meeting Goose. He has some odd ear issues and then soon after one of his eyes was bothering him. Goose’s grandpa and I treated him while the parents went out of town. He was good about being picked up and held while I gave medications then put the kiwi-like donut on so he wouldn’t rub. In the short amount of time I spent with him it was clear he had a big loving personality.
What seemed to be minor issues weren’t resolving and his parents opted to follow up immediately after they returned. His testing didn’t go smoothly as Goose developed complications. Despite getting the best care his body continued to shut down.
It will never surprise me how easy it is to fall in love with a pet that allows you to help when they need it. When I worked emergency there was always one or two a year that grabbed my heart, and when they didn’t make it, broke it. Goose was a beautiful soul who very much so reminded me of one of my cats, who despite everything I did could not pull through.
This was about 3 months ago. Since then I helped take care of a cute black cat that despite her trying to look scary was very cooperative for medication and attention once she succumbed to the burrito wrap. She too had large hidden underlying issues that came up a few weeks after that and it was also too much for her.
Beginning of October my family’s dog Cody finished his 2 plus year fight of neuropathy. With time, care, and a solid combination of medication and supplements we got his legs moving better for quite some time. He kept going while one set back after another developed and was managed. We celebrated his last day with a long slow walk, hamburgers, chicken, and licking a vanilla milkshake as he went.
Finally 2 weeks ago, I was starting a walk with two dogs I take care of on a regular basis. We were about 5 houses away when one stopped and howled. There are 2 types of huskies; 98% are the fun dramatic diva types, the other 2% are the most stoic and kind dogs you will ever meet. Bogey was a 2 percenter. The howl was heartbreaking because I knew him and suspected it might be bad. I carried him back home and gave him pain medication. He already had an appointment coming up and I wanted his dad to spend time with him when he got back. The findings were confirmed and not fixable. He also spent the day with families and friends before he crossed.
I have been lucky enough to meet some wonderful souls, but due to the nature of my job I have seen some of them all the way to the end. It is not always easy, and to be honest sometimes it shuts me down for a bit. But at end of the day I am honored to walk a part of their journey with them and do what I can.
To all the Gooses in the world, may you be as loved as this wonderful boy was.
