Quick Training Tip:
Dogs are very positional learners.
That means a dog may understand a rule, boundary, or command in one situation, but struggle when the picture changes.
For example, your dog may know “place” when you are standing right beside them, but get up when you sit on the couch. They may hold a boundary when you are facing them, but step through it when you turn your back. They may listen in the kitchen, but act confused in the living room.
To the dog, those can feel like completely different situations.
That is why consistency matters.
If the rule only applies when you are standing a certain way, in one room, or watching closely, the dog may not fully understand the concept yet. They have learned a pattern, not the boundary.
Practice commands, boundaries, and control from different positions, different rooms, and different levels of movement.
The goal is not just for your dog to obey in one setup. The goal is for them to understand the concept no matter what the picture looks like.
