Why "He Just Wants to Say Hi!" is Dangerous 🛑🐾
We’ve all heard it—a dog charges toward you while the owner yells from a distance, "Don’t worry, he’s friendly!"
At Dino Dog K9 Training, we teach that a "friendly" dog with no boundaries is a major safety risk. Respecting personal space is the foundation of a polite dog community. Here is why that "friendly" greeting can go wrong fast.
1. You Don't Know the Other Dog's Story
Your dog might be social, but the dog they are rushing could be:
In Training:Working hard on focus and neutrality.
Fearful or Reactive:Recovering from trauma or uncomfortable with strange dogs.
In Pain:A dog with a sore hip or recovering from surgery may snap to protect themselves.
Working:Service dogs should never be approached or distracted.
2. The Leash Imbalance
When an off-leash dog rushes a leashed dog, it creates a power imbalance. The leashed dog knows they cannot escape, which can trigger a "fight" response in a dog that is normally calm. This is how "friendly" greetings turn into vet visits.
3. Neutrality Over Socialization
Many owners think every walk is a social hour.
The Reality: True socialization isn't about meeting everyone; it’s about being **neutral**.
The Goal:We want your dog to see another dog and think, "Cool, another dog exists," and then look back to you for direction.
💡 The Dino Dog Safety Rule
Ask first, every single time.If the other owner says no, don't take it personally. They are advocating for their dog’s needs. Keeping your dog under control isn't just about rules—it’s about respect.
