San Antonio summers don't play around. And neither do we when it comes to keeping your dog safe. 🌡️
Before you head out for that walk, try this first: press your hand flat on the pavement and hold it there for 7 seconds.
If you can't — your dog can't walk on it.
Asphalt absorbs heat fast and holds it long after the sun moves. Paw pads can blister in minutes on a surface that feels only mildly warm to a quick touch. And dogs will keep walking even when they're hurting, because that's what dogs do.
A few things that actually help:
🐾 Walk early morning or after sunset — not mid-afternoon
🐾 Choose grass and shade over pavement whenever possible
🐾 Bring water, always
🐾 Toss a few ice cubes in their bowl at home to help them cool down and stay hydrated
Your dog trusts you to read the environment for them. On a San Antonio summer day, that trust matters more than getting the walk in.
The walk can wait. Their paws can't recover as fast as we'd like.
