In human medicine, when you’re sick or need a wellness checkup, you visit your family doctor. But when you have a special healthcare need, your doctor will likely recommend a specialist – like a cardiologist, a dermatologist or an oncologist. The same is true in veterinary medicine. #beingBluePearl #vetmedicine

When a Good Samaritan found a bleeding cat on the side of the road and brought her to BluePearl in Queens, NY, her journey to healing began. Her initial examination revealed that her right eye was partially displaced while her left eye was also injured. She had also sustained a fracture to her lower jaw.
Unfortunately, she did not have ID tags or a microchip to track down an owner but thankfully, AMA Animal Rescue funded her medical care. After her CT scan, the surgery team in Queens stabilized her jaw and an ophthalmologist examined her eyes.
As she was blind and becoming noticeably more sensitive, withdrawn, and painful, her eyes were both removed on 5/4/20. Since the evening of surgery, she has been incredibly more interactive, comfortable, and eager to carefully explore her surroundings. She requires much less assistance to find her food and eats and uses her litter box with no issues.
Team member, Dr. Park, became her medical foster and will soon adopt her.
Dr. Park said, "Throughout all of this (even at her most painful), she has been unbelievably sweet, and has never acted fearful or aggressive in the slightest. No one would blame her for lashing out or being scared after what she has experienced, but she chooses not to fear, and her bravery is beautiful. She has learned that a kiss noise means head pets, and she accepts assistance to help her navigate, eat, and get medications with no hard feelings. Her absolute trust in those of us who have nursed her is so heartwarming, and has made caring for her so much easier than it might have been. Her adaptability in the face of so much pain and change has been an inspiring thing to witness. I think it resonates with our humanity to see any creature (animal or human) choose love and trust over fear, and I hope we can all learn to emulate that courage and resilience in these difficult times.
Thanks to Drs. Lefman, Iacovetta, and Levy with BluePearl, Mari V and Dr. Abraham with the AMA Animal Rescue, and especia
