Depending on your dog or the training goals you have in mind, sometimes it’s best not to let strangers pet your dog.  However, saying “No” can be awkward! One of the most common questions I get is, “how do you say no nicely?”

Below are my top “nice” ways to say no when someone asks to pet your dog.

1. No, We are in training but thank you for asking.
2. Not today, We’re focusing on socialization at a distance
3. Not today, maybe next time.
4. You cant pet, but you can give a treat
5. No, but thank you for asking, have a nice day

Keep your tone polite, but be clear and set the boundaries you see best for your dog! If you want to play it safe, you can always have a leash banner or other tool help!

Our dog’s behaviors are frequently driven by our behaviors as owners. This is why acknowledging and controlling inappropriate reinforcements is an essential part of your dog’s training.

Behaviors such as pulling on leash, jumping on people, frustration-based reactivity, disregarding recalls, and many other behaviors owners typically want to change are often taught to our dogs due to what we do as owners.

This is also often why there is a disconnect between what we WANT to teach our dogs vs what we ARE teaching our dogs.

When teaching place we want to focus on both the command and the mindset! The command teaches our dog to go to place and stay there until released. The mindset teaches them how to settle down!

When teaching place, you want to focus on two components—the command and the mindset! The command teaches your dog to go to an object and stay until released. The mindset teaches our dogs how to settle while on place regardless of what is occurring around them.

If you have a dog that understands place but doesn’t yet understand how to relax or pick up on the mindset, a private virtual coaching session would be an excellent way to work together to teach your dog!

Virtual coaching sessions are built to address your training needs specifically and are custom to you and your dog! These sessions are excellent opportunities to work together to create training plans, discuss your goals, and address your biggest concerns

The pupsicle is one of my go-to enrichments for our dogs! However, if you have multiple dogs like us, you can go through fills quickly. with a DIY mold, you can make your own fills, and with an airtight seal container, you can store as many as you want to easy access!

The last month has been crazy, but we’ve officially landed in our new home in Georgia!
