We are thinking about adding a 4-week class but are trying to decide between two different things. I'd set up a poll, but I actually can't figure it out! So please comment which you class you would like to see us add...thank you all for your input!!!
Class #1 -- a sampler class. This class would introduce different dog activities/sports to you and your dog: agility, targeting/platforms, musical freestyle/tricks, and scentwork.
Class #2 -- an in-person class to help you prepare for AKC's Virtual Scentwork Trial. From the AKC website: The VSWT requires dogs to prove basic Scent Work skills. The testing criteria allows owners to utilize their home surroundings to conduct timed searches in areas such as a living room, a bedroom or outside in the backyard. Common items such as a ball, dog toy, or treat are used as target articles. As an example, for the Beginner level, the dog must find one item (choice of ball, toy or treat) inside the home at ground level up within 1.5 minutes in one search area. Each test level is a little more challenging.
When I am in my learning or teaching zone, I rarely remember to take photos. This week is no exception! I did grab one video today and I got this screenshot from that video. But it’s pretty perfect. 😊 This week Side By Side hosted Aleks Woodroffe from for three days of scentwork workshops and private sessions. I wanted the opportunity to be able to do something for me and my dogs in our training journey and these three days are the result of me responding to what I wanted/needed. Dog trainers need to, SHOULD, seek out learning opportunities and it had been way too long since I had done that. I’m so glad it worked out and I’m so grateful Aleks was willing to help me figure this out!!!

Love of dogs and doing things with our dogs is part of Side By Side’s foundation. It is so wonderful when other people and businesses recognize and support it! A few of us got out tonight to do some scentwork training and loved being able to train in a safe, new location. Thank you for generously allowing us to use your space!!! What does positive reinforcement trained rattlesnake avoidance look like? This. The dog perceives the snake and indicates that to their human through a change in behavior. In ‘s case, she moves away from the snake. We are not creating fear, we are creating awareness. Fear is unpredictable. Knowledge and learning is reliable. Auggie went through our very first rattlesnake avoidance class almost two years ago and has maintained this knowledge since then! Special thanks to for their expertise, knowledge, and their snakes!!! A couple new classes are on the website — Agility for Fun (a low-key, fun intro to playing with your dog and obstacles — NOT a competition foundation class) and Intro to Rally (learn more about Rally and see if it is something you and your dog like to do!).
We’ve had a lot of inquiries about our scent classes and they’ll be listed *PROBABLY* next week. So keep an eye out for them.
We are working on getting our next Rattlesnake Avoidance class set up. Once we get the snakes’ visits set up, we’ll be ready to list the class. A heads up — we are 95% sure it will be a Sunday midday class time.
New foundation classes will be listed mid-May.

Several times a year, Side By Side hosts a C-WAGS league for teams to play in Rally, Obedience, Games and/or Scent. It's a great way for teams to compete without the weekend-long commitment of a "normal" dog show.
We are very excited that our Spring 2022 League will be all the sports!!! It will be on Tuesday (Rally, Games, and Obedience) and Thursday (Scent) evenings in April and May starting at 6:30 p.m. (we try to be done by 9:00-ish p.m.)
We are looking for volunteers who would like to help the judges. The volunteers will primarily be responsible for timing and for preparing ribbons. It's a great chance to learn more about competition and all the sports. If you're interested, please contact us!

Gross air days (it’s inversion season in Utah!) present challenges for exercising our dogs. Training some fun things and mental enrichment is my go-to when I want to minimize all of us breathing this garbage. Emme worked on showing me where her tracking glove hides the treats, Blitz played fetch with his tracking glove, and Bell had her food puzzle for breakfast and worked on her “up/sits.” What fun indoor things do you and your dogs like to do?

Enrichment/mental stimulation is more than just throwing their food in a toy and hoping for the best! There are definitely some dogs who need no introduction to different puzzles, but there are some who need a more step-by-step approach (darn mammalian brains ;) -- so similar and so unique all at the same time!). These graphics give you some great ideas and steps to take if you need to introduce your dog more methodically to some of the more popular puzzles. Remember to move forward -- don't stop at their kibble in a Kong and say they are "bored" with it. Yes, yes they are. Go to the next step and increase both the excitement and the difficulty!

I'll be honest...after the last two years, I am not at all sure how I feel about even just THINKING about goals for the next year! But somehow I can't help myself, so I'll go into 2022 attempting to be cautiously optimistic.

I'll start (because accountability is good, right? :) ):
All of them -- health and happiness.
Dolly -- AKC Scentwork Excellent Containers title, play in C-WAGS whenever she wants/feels up to it, get as many snuggles and pets in as we possibly can!!!
Blitz -- C-WAGS Obedience 1 ACE (3 more Qs!) which will also mean his C-WAGS Level 1 Master Title, start competing in C-WAGS and maybe AKC Scentwork, tracking, and playing keep away and tug a lot.
Emme -- work on upper level Rally skills for C-WAGS and WCRL, work on WCRL ARCHX title, consider AKC Obedience (Beginner Novice or Novice?), tracking, scentwork, scentwork, and more scentwork (demo dog, titles in AKC, C-WAGS, and maybe UKC)! Therapy dog work -- find her niche. Lots of sniffy walks.
Bell -- conformation, begin Rally, work on Novice scentwork title and C-WAGS scent. Therapy dog work -- find her niche -- maybe get her certified with another handler or two. Lots of playing with her bestie, Auggie.
