Hi all ~ We are working hard to fundraise for this year's trip to the Parents of Murdered Children Conference with our therapy dogs. Please consider buying a shirt (or two!) and/or donating. Sharing this post also helps us!!! Thank you in advance.

We do this as volunteers at our own expense and have been attending the conference annually since 2009.

Sorry for the delay in posting about this, but March has been crazy!!! (In a good way…) You know how much I value continuing education, so when I had the chance to work with Michele Pouliot, I jumped! Earlier this month Emme, Bell, and I spent three days training with Michele and other wonderful friends with their dogs. So much learning and so much fun!!! This is a screen shot from a video while working on Emme’s retrieve — a treasured moment in so many ways. ❤️❤️❤️ Never stop learning. Never stop training. Never stop having fun with your dog.

Can we please stop saying a tired dog is a happy dog or a good dog? A tired dog is a tired dog. Wearing a dog out does not make the dog happier or better, it just makes the dog tired. And tired can look a lot of different ways!!! It can be sleeping and relaxing, but it also can be zoomies and acting out. It’s about balance — the right amount of physical exercise with the right amount of mental exercise with the right amount of sleep. Please contact me if you have questions or need help! I’m here for you. But please stop building stamina in your dog and find the balance that works for both you and your dog!

Can your dog handle looking out the window? Or would it be better to manage this? Emme enjoys nature tv in our backyard through these windows. And, unless the neighborhood cats decide to all congregate and have a meeting back there, she is perfectly content to watch. But if it becomes too much and she is barking and carrying on, I’m going to manage her access to nature tv.

Separation Anxiety is devastating for both the humans and the dog! It makes normal, every day things so much more difficult.

Separation Anxiety is a phobia. Your dog is not "getting back at you" for leaving them or acting out intentionally. Your dog is scared and panicked about being left alone. It also is not something that will just go away. It takes work to help your dog be comfortable with being alone.

But there's hope! As a Certified Separation Anxiety Trainer (CSAT), I can help you navigate this scary, restrictive world and help you help your dog to be comfortable being left alone.

It takes time and effort, but the results are life changing!

I currently have room in my schedule for 2 new Separation Anxiety-affected families. You can be anywhere because all of our sessions will be virtual (I am not part of your dog's every day life and working in this way allows so much flexibility and success in the process!). Please contact me to set up an initial phone call to get started so I can help you get back to living life with your dog, side by side.

Why has “management” become a bad thing? As in, I don’t want to have to manage my dog their whole life. Do you feed your dog? Fill their water bowl? Let them outside? Put a collar or harness on them? All of these things are management (that you will do their whole lives)! Management is living life together with our dogs, side by side — NOT a terrible, bad thing.
In our new house, the kitchen garbage is under the sink and a certain Queen Bee-gle figured out pretty quickly how to access it. Could I train her to leave it alone? Sure! But for less than $20 and 1 hour of time, child locks are installed and we can move on to other fun things! Interestingly, as soon as the locks were installed, she stopped even trying to open the cabinet. 🤔(Photos were staged. Swipe to see the Swiss Miss wanting in on the picture taking action! ❤️)

A heads up from Emme, our Chief Treat Officer!!! Laurie and her family are moving to South Carolina and Side By Side Dog Training is going virtual. I will be focusing on dogs with big feelings, competition dogs (mostly rally, obedience, and trial prep — scentwork will also be a limited option), therapy dogs, and coming soon — separation anxiety. Laurie is taking a little bit of time off but will be back online in a few weeks with more information on our new set up!!! Happy October everyone!!!

While we no longer are holding classes/sessions at the training center on 33rd South in SLC, we’re still offering private sessions (virtual, in-home, and at Quibell’s ‘n Bits) and out-and-about classes (including our Rattlesnake Avoidance class). Please keep an eye on our website for new classes and training opportunities!!! Thank you for your support as we navigate this transition!!!

04/25/2023

I will be at Side By Side tomorrow (Wednesday, 4/26) in the afternoon, 1 -- 3 p.m. and in the evening for a short time, 4:30 -- 6-ish p.m. If you are interested in anything I have left, please stop by. I have food puzzles, scentwork items, targets, PVC ring gates, IKEA step stools, a coffee pot, a glass top desk/coffee station, microwave, mini fridge, leashes, treat pouches, and odds and ends. Everything is reasonably priced. Cash, check, or Venmo.

04/24/2023

If you have not heard, these are our last few days in our training facility on 33rd South. I have made the decision to significantly cut back on my hours to be able to go back to school to become a Certified Separation Anxiety Trainer. We are still offering private sessions (in home, on location, and virtual) and will be scheduling several out and about classes coming up soon!!!

I want to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support over the last 10 years in Utah and 5 years in this location! It's been an exciting and fun journey and while I am a little sad about cutting back, I'm also very excited about what the future holds and how we can help even more dogs and their families. Thank you again, please keep in touch (this page and our website will still be your source for information about Side By Side Dog Training), and I look forward to seeing you soon!

Please think on all this and consider how you interact with dogs. Let’s set up both humans and dogs for success!

And is a wrap! Not bringing a dog this year (for the first time!) apparently meant I didn’t take hardly any pictures!!! So here are the two pics I got — my friend/colleague/mentor .monaco.torelli and I and ‘s dog, Nora helping me take notes. ❤️ As always, I learned a lot and am looking forward to putting it all into action! Continuing education is so very important for trainers striving for excellence. Never hesitate to ask your trainer about theirs.

Exactly what I recommend!!! My youngest also came home in March 2020 (she and Strax are buddies!) and except for forgetting about flippy floppy balloon men, I am quite happy with what we did with her for socialization. We’re happy to support you and your puppy in this important endeavor. Please feel free to ask questions.

Say “Hi” to All The Things! by Tena Parker | Feb 7, 2023 | Uncategorized | 0 comments Or not. This is probably the biggest mistake people make under the guise of “socializing” their puppy. Socialization is about acclimating to the world, not going to say hi to everyone and everything in it. ...

Seriously folks. This is your "magic wand" for polite leash walking. Put in the time and effort to teach a solid foundation and you will have a lovely polite leash walk behavior in short order!

Yes. This is how we teach it in our classes. Depending on which class you are in, we start the teaching process in different places.
