We know you’re so excited to go on some autumn nature walks with your dog, but for this #FallSafetyTip, make sure you watch out for snakes, some of which can be venomous! They’re preparing for hibernation and may be a little crankier if disturbed by a curious pet! 🐍

When walking or hiking, if something happens to your pet, be sure to contact your veterinarian as soon as possible. #VCApets

Today is Global Cat Day, a special occasion devoted to unowned, free-roaming “community” cats. These cats often get a bad rap but it’s important to understand that these cats aren’t so different from our beloved pets. As a matter of fact, many are living on the streets as a result of being abandoned by their families.

We've included some tips to help manage and care for the community cats in your neighborhood.

Helping these cats starts by being a responsible guardian! Spay/neuter your own cat and keep them indoors.

* In just seven years, a single pair of cats and their offspring could produce a staggering total of 420,000 kittens! #VCApets

🏥🐶🐍When Kent Jones was almost 6 years old, he was attacked and severely injured by a dog. “After that I was terrified of every animal,” Kent said. “My dad grew up on a farm, and he knew that was something he had to get out of my system.” Surrounding Kent with an assortment of animals in childhood, his dad was successful. Just over 20 years later, the days of being afraid of dogs are long gone - Kent will begin work as a small animal veterinarian at Cottonwood Animal Hospital after graduation this spring. Kent and two others from the WSU College of Veterinary Medicine Class of 2022, Ryan Schreyer and Shane Bowen, will make up doctors 12, 13, and 14 at the high-volume, 24-hour emergency practice. The move will put Kent a little closer to home. Kent is from the beehive state, and one of about 30 Utah State University students who began his veterinary education in Utah. Because of a cooperative agreement between Utah State and WSU, Utah residents accepted into the DVM program at WSU spend the first two years learning with leading Utah faculty before coming to WSU for their final two years. Kent plans to focus on small animal medicine and surgery, but he expects to see some exotic animals as well; exotics has been his favorite rotation so far at WSU’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital. His wife, Connie; his son TK (Tony Kent); his daughter Scarlett; another baby girl that is on the way, along with his dog Jenna; cat Stray; and bearded dragon Stoick, will all be moving from Pullman to Utah this spring. Kent said he will miss his classmates. “The students are amazing. Coming from Utah I thought there would be this big divide between Utah students and Washington students, but everyone is extremely accepting,” Kent said. “It didn’t take long for all of us to become friends.” #WSU #GoCougs #WSUVetMed #VeterinaryMedicine

You have a basset hound as a patient there named Miss B. What do you have her age?
My mom and I waited over 4 hours to have her 9 year old Maltese, Jasper, seen the week of March 15th (2021). She brought Jasper into the urgent care (emergency) portion of the hospital because over the course of a 1-2 week period, Jasper had stopped using his right hind leg and he appeared to be in severe pain. He was whimpering, would not anyone touch his hind leg or the surrounding area, and struggled going to the bathroom. The doctor who saw Jasper did not spend any time listening to my mom's observations and only spent a couple of minutes examining Jasper. She concluded it was a digestive issue and prescribed antibiotics. This diagnosis did not make much sense to us, but we gave the prescription to Jasper. As predicted, the antibiotics did not help Jasper. My mom had to wait 6 weeks to get into see a primary care vet and the subsequent referral to a specialist. What Jasper was actually suffering from was a cancerous tumor. It was fast growing, and if the doctor at Cottonwood had bothered to listen to my mom and perform a thorough examination, she might have realized a specialist was needed and made the referral in time to save Jasper. Because of the quick and sloppy examination by this clinic, we lost 6 weeks and the chance to save our dog. We are heartbroken and I hope this clinic re-evaluates how they run their business. We were told numerous times his condition was not life threatening and were shown no sympathy or compassion by this clinic. As it turns out, the condition was life threatening. I would never bring another animal to this emergency hospital and I truly hope they re-evaluate how they are conducting their business. No pet owner deserves to go through this type of inconsiderate treatment or receive such incompetent care for their pet.
Thank you so much for taking care of Koda last month! She has made a full recovery from Parvo and is happy and healthy. I know she wouldn't have made it except for the exceptional care she received while in your care. I am especially grateful to Dr. Williams! Thank you so much for going the extra mile and being so dedicated to your patients. Koda thanks you and I do also!
Thank you so much for saving my baby Rex
Thanks for seeing Jo today. Staff was lovely and I appreciate the care that was given to her and myself despite you all being very busy and managing covid.
Another great veterinary collaboration today. Small ruminants are growing in popularity and moving from farm animals to pet animals. We are incredibly lucky to have an excellent working relationship with Dr Bagley at Cottonwood Animal Hospital which allows us to offer orthopedic and soft tissue surgeries to our clients. Today Bean has a FHO due to a broken femoral head and will go home tonight for his rehab.
Thank you for taking such great care of Bella! She is back to hiking and being her happy self again. You guys are the best 🖤🖤🖤
