🐭💚 Meet Poptart, the Chinchilla!
We absolutely loved caring for Poptart, an adorable baby chinchilla! These little animals are known for their curious, gentle personalities and lots of energy. Here are a few fun facts about chinchillas:
💨No water baths here! Chinchillas don’t take water baths — they take dust baths! Special dust helps remove oil and moisture from their thick fur and keeps it healthy. Water can cause problems with their dense fur, so chinchillas should never be given a traditional water bath.
✨ They can jump! Chinchillas are incredibly agile and can jump up to 5 feet in the air.
🧸 Super-soft fur: A chinchilla’s fur is among the softest of any animal — about 30 times softer than human hair! They can have 50 or more hairs growing from a single follicle, compared with just one hair per follicle for humans.
🦷 Their teeth never stop growing: Chinchillas have continuously growing teeth, so plenty of safe chew toys are important to help keep their teeth worn down.
💨 They take dust baths: Chinchillas use special dust baths to remove oil and moisture from their thick fur and keep it healthy. They should never be bathed in water, as getting wet can cause serious problems with their fur.
🗣️ They’re quite the communicators: Chinchillas can make a variety of sounds, including barking, chirping, grunting and squealing.
🥕 Tiny paws, big appetite: When they eat, chinchillas often sit on their haunches and use their front paws to hold their food.
