Behind the Medicine: Nimbus’s Story
Nimbus is part of the Vintage family, as his mom is one of our team members. He presented on October 10th for acute hind limb lameness. He was sedated for radiographs and bloodwork. Due to his lack of reflexes and pain response, he was immediately referred to a specialty hospital for a full neurologic evaluation.
Nimbus’s evaluation revealed neurologic deficits consistent with an injury to the spinal cord in the middle to lower back. He was anesthetized for an MRI of the spine, which confirmed herniation of intervertebral disc material causing compression and injury to the spinal cord. This explained Nimbus’s difficulty walking.
Given the severity of his condition, Nimbus underwent emergency neurosurgery to decompress the spinal cord. Surgery was successful, and he recovered from anesthesia without complications.
Nimbus spent the majority of his recovery hospitalized close to his mom, where he could be closely monitored and medicated. During the first few weeks, improvement was minimal, with only small glimpses of progress. Over time, he slowly began to regain sensation and use of his hind limbs.
A structured physical therapy program was implemented at SOAR, including use of the underwater treadmill and laser therapy. After several long months of persistent and loving care, Nimbus now walks into the clinic on his own, although still a little wobbly, gaining strength and stability each day. He is happy and overall pain-free.
