How to Fix a Cloudy Tank Caused by Soil Substrate

(Sent to us by a follower) This aquarium is dealing with a common issue: disturbed substrate. When using soil or dirt as a base layer, it is essential to "lock" it in place with a thick, physical barrier (like a layer of pool filter sand) to prevent it from mixing into the water column.

If you are dealing with this in your own tank, here is how to resolve the issue and prevent it from happening again.

Phase 1: The Cleanup
Unfortunately, there is no magic "quick fix" for cloudy water.

· Wait it out: Allow the water to sit undisturbed for a few hours.

· Drain: Once the particles have settled, drain the tank using a siphon.

Tip: You do not need to save the cloudy water to preserve beneficial bacteria. Beneficial bacteria primarily live in your filter media and on the substrate/decor, not in the water column itself. Using fresh, dechlorinated water will actually help your tank clear up much faster.

Phase 2: The Permanent Fix (The "Cap")
To stop the soil from clouding the water again, you need to create a proper seal:

1. Prepare the Sand: Rinse your pool filter sand multiple times in dechlorinated or distilled water until the runoff is clear. This removes dust that causes initial cloudiness.

2. Apply the Cap: Gently remove the top layer of pebbles. Add a 2–3 inch layer of your rinsed pool filter sand over the soil base.

3. Restore: Carefully place the pebbles and decorative rocks back on top of the sand layer.

4. Refill: Slowly add your new, dechlorinated water back into the tank.

5. Cycle: Allow the tank to run and cycle for a day or two. The water should be significantly clearer.

A Note on Livestock
If you have fish in the tank (we only see snails in the photo, which likely hitched a ride on the plants), you must move them to a secondary holding tank during this process.

· Ensure the holding tank has a heater and use a water conditioner/stress coat.

· Do not feed the fish while they are in the holding tank to keep the water quality high during the transition.
