āØWhat does the term āsocializingā mean? āØ
The term socializing has been a buzzword in dog training circles for a while now. And usually, it has a different meaning to everyone.
For me, it absolutely does NOT mean to take my puppy out and force it into allowing a bunch of strangers to pet it. I donāt need my dogs to seek out attention from other people. I need them to be stable and safe around other people, sure. But I have seen a lot of people insist that their dog MUST be touched by a dozen different people every single day.
To me, that goes against directly what the breed standard tells us that a well bred German Shepherd should act like. They should be self confident and ALOOF dogs. And it seems everyone wants a Golden Retriever in a German Shepherd body.
So, in my opinion, socializing means exposing your puppy to different environments. By doing that, theyāll be exposed to different people, as well. Thereās no need to allow strangers to pet your puppy. Just simply tell them, āThank you, but weāre workingā and move on.
