My next set of Nosework classes start soon in Montpelier! This have been a blast. It's so fun to see dogs learn to use their nose, and for owners to connect with their dogs in a whole new way.

And, every dog leaves class happily exhausted.

This class takes place every other week, which is a perfect setup for busy dog parents. You'll have enough time to practice what we talk about in class and you can email or text me with questions in the off weeks.

These are also small classes, so you'll get lots of one on one support.

Between dog training sessions, you can find me at ! My days are filled with helping clients prep for summer activities with their dogs, like with improving recall and reducing reactivity, and the 30min between clients isn't really enough to go home.

So instead, I get to go to 60 Lake St. to respond to emails, write client notes, and enjoy the bright light that floods this space. I get so much more done, too, when others are working around me.

Cody has done a lovely job of crafting an inviting, focused office with great ameneties (so many tea options!) and I can't recommend it here enough.

And, thanks to this space, all of my clients get thorough notes for each training session.

Happy Birthday to Nandor!!! I can't believe he's 1 year old today. We've been through a lot in the last year, and it feels like we're coming out the other side. I'm so grateful to everyone that has given advice and supported us as we figured each other out (and continue to do so).

I've learned an incredible amount uabout border collies and how to train them. Well, one type of them. The variations in the breed are truly astounding, and I really believe Nandor is a great example of a confident, brilliant, and loving working lines bc. He challenges me a lot, and I am growing as a person and trainer because of it.

Here's to Nandor the Relentless, WMF PUT YOUR NECK IN MY MOUTH.

Dallas is a typical herding mix - focused on surroundings, sensitive to movement, and vocal when uncomfortable.

That can translate to reactivity pretty quickly and can feel overwhelming to both human and dog.

So what do I do to train calm in these situations?

First, I figured out how far away we needed to be for Dallas to feel comfortable. Here, at the start of the session, we're a bit away from the playground and picnic tables, and that's where Dallas could show me all these great signals of him feeling relaxed.

I played some games with him here, like Look at That, and we did some treat scatters.

Then we moved a little closer, and played games again.

I repeated this a few times until we were reasonably close to other people, and Dallas maintained his calm.

This is how I love to work on reactivity - small steps that focus on building positive or neutral feelings about whatever is initially troublesome, and always giving the dog the option to take a break.

A few weeks ago, Northwest Access TV had Rosie and I on to demo Nosework!

I love working with clients on enrichment activities like this. Not only does it result in a tired, happy dog, it also builds on your relationship together in unique ways.

Providing dogs with outlets for their natural instincts, like sniffing, can have a lot of benefits like increased confidence, lowered anxiety, and calmer behavior.

Essentially, activities like Nosework can help prevent dogs from finding destructive or problematic outlets for their energy.

This is why, even if I'm working on behavioral issues with clients, I always build in enrichment activities to our sessions. This might look like basic agility, or providing boxes for dogs to destroy, or going on sniffy walks. There are so many options, and I love helping my clients find the most enjoyable ones for them and their dogs.
