✨ Today I had the pleasure of working with Honey, a five-year-old Cavalier Poodle who is incredibly smart and observant. She watched every move I made and kept her eyes on her parents as we talked. Honey is growing up alongside her one-year-old human brother, and it was so sweet to see how proactive her family is in setting them both up for success together. 💛WiseCanineTraining

Chloe is a sweet Golden Retriever who lost confidence going outside around age 2. For the past few years, she’s only felt safe on walks very early in the morning or late in the evening. We’re working slowly and gently to help her feel more comfortable exploring the world in the afternoons too 💛🐾 Progress, not pressure.

🐾 Dog Behavior Tip: What Does It Really Mean When a Dog Lies on Their Back? 🐾

As a trainer who specializes in understanding dog body language, I often see people interpret a dog rolling onto their back as a universal sign for “belly rub, please!” While that can be true in some cases, there’s actually a lot more going on—and it’s important to look at the whole picture before reaching in for those pets. 🐶

Here are a few common reasons a dog might lie on their back:

🔹 Appeasement / Deference
A dog may roll onto their back to signal that they’re not a threat. This is often seen when a dog is feeling unsure or overwhelmed. It’s their way of saying, “I’m not here to challenge you.”

🔹 Submission
In some contexts—especially with dogs meeting new people or dogs—they may roll onto their back to communicate, “I submit.” This isn’t an invitation for engagement; it’s a request to not be approached too directly.

🔹 Comfort and Trust
If your dog flops on their back in the middle of the living room and dozes off, that’s a great sign—they feel safe and secure in your home. Some dogs just love to lounge belly-up!

🔹 Playfulness or Soliciting Affection
Yes, sometimes a dog really is saying “rub my belly!” But ideally, you want to read their body language—are they relaxed, wiggly, and inviting, or tense, still, and uncertain?

🐕 Quick Tip for Petting a Belly-Up Dog:
Look for a loose, wiggly body, relaxed facial expression, soft eyes, and a gently wagging tail. If the dog stiffens, licks their lips, freezes, or tucks their tail—respect their space and hold off.

Understanding body language helps us build trust and deepen our bond with our dogs. The more we listen, the more they feel heard. 💛

🇺🇸🎆 Keeping Your Dog Safe During Fireworks 🎆🇺🇸

Many dogs have noise phobia, and the sound of fireworks can be genuinely traumatic. If your dog struggles with loud noises, please don’t take them to fireworks events. Even dogs who seem “okay” can panic, bolt, or develop lasting fear.

If your dog doesn’t do well alone, arrange for someone they trust to stay home with them. If you’ll be home, here are evidence-based ways to help keep them safe and as comfortable as possible:

🐾 Take your dog out for potty breaks and exercise earlier in the day, before it gets dark. Many dogs will bolt, jump fences, or run away when fireworks start—I personally know of many dogs who have.

🐾 Use ear covers or noise-dampening headphones designed for dogs.

🐾 Consider a Thundershirt or compression wrap to provide calming pressure.

🐾 Offer high-value chews or food-stuffed toys—bully sticks, lick mats, or frozen Kongs can help redirect focus.

🐾 Play calming music for dogs or white noise to help mask the sounds.

🐾 Create a safe space—a cozy den, a crate with a blanket over it, or a quiet room where they can retreat.

🐾 Stay with them. Your presence matters and can be very reassuring.

🐾 If your dog has severe anxiety, talk to your veterinarian about medication, but be sure any medication has been trialed well in advance. Never give a new sedative for the first time on a high-stress night, as adverse reactions can happen.

This Fourth of July, let’s prioritize our dogs’ wellbeing and safety. 💙
