The swim lesson that Kona participated in during our Manners Camp pool time outing really helped her once she got to her new home. We are so proud of you Kona!!! Her parents did a great job of getting right in there and teaching her where the steps are so she can exit safely.

🚪🐾 Teach Your Dog to Wait at the Door!

Does your dog bolt through doors? Teach a reliable “Wait” cue to keep them safe and calm!

Here’s how:
1️⃣ Ask your dog to Sit at the closed door.
2️⃣ Say “Wait” and slowly begin to open the door just a crack.
3️⃣ If they move, gently close the door and try again.
4️⃣ Reward with praise or treats when they stay in place!
5️⃣ Increase the door opening a little at a time as they succeed.

💡 Pro Tip: Use this cue at front doors, car doors, and gates to prevent accidents.

Consistency builds calm confidence. Train in short, positive sessions and celebrate progress! 🐶💛

📣 Beat the Heat: Safe Summer Dog Training Tips! ☀️🐾

When the forecast calls for high temps, your dog’s safety comes first! Here’s how to keep training on track without overheating your pup:

🌅 Train Early or Late: Aim for early morning (before 9 AM) or late evening (after 7 PM) sessions when it’s coolest.
🌳 Use Shade Smartly: Stick to shaded areas or grassy spots to avoid hot pavement and sun exposure.
💧 Hydration Is Key: Bring water for BOTH of you—offer frequent breaks during training.
🐶 Watch for Signs of Overheating: Excessive panting, drooling, or slowing down = time to stop.
⛔ Avoid Hot Pavement: If it’s too hot for your bare foot, it’s too hot for their paws!

📆 On especially hot days, switch to mental enrichment indoors—like scent games, trick training, or puzzle toys.

🧠 A mentally tired dog is a well-behaved dog, even when it’s too hot to run and play!

• ☀️ “Best Times: Before 9 AM & After 7 PM”
• 🌳 “Use Shade & Grass”
• 💧 “Bring Water”
• 🚫 “Avoid Hot Pavement”
• 🧠 “Do Enrichment Indoors on Extreme Days”

Teaching your dog to be safe around a backyard swimming pool is critical—especially in warmer months. Even strong swimmers can panic or tire quickly if they fall in and don’t know how to get out. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help your dog learn pool safety:

🐾 How to Teach Your Dog to Be Safe Around the Pool

✅ 1. Teach Your Dog How to Exit the Pool

The most important thing a dog must know is how to get out.
• Use landmarks: Always guide your dog to the same exit point (steps or a ramp). Repeat until they can find it on their own.
• Practice with guidance: Use a leash and calmly lead them to the exit several times. Reward with praise or treats.
• Practice from multiple spots in the pool so they learn to orient and swim to the exit from any angle.

✅ 2. Introduce the Pool Gradually
• Let your dog explore the area with no pressure to enter the water.
• Walk them around the edge and steps; let them sniff and observe.
• Encourage them to step in shallow areas first (like the tanning ledge or steps).

✅ 3. Supervise Closely Around Water
• Never assume your dog is safe alone near water.
• Use pool gates or covers when not supervised.
• Small dogs, senior dogs, and brachycephalic (flat-nosed) breeds are at higher risk of drowning.

✅ 4. Teach a “Stay” or “Leave It” Around the Pool
• Train your dog to wait for permission before getting into the pool.
• This is important for dogs who love water and might jump in without warning.

✅ 5. Consider Safety Equipment
• Use a dog pool ramp to make exits easier.
• A dog life vest is essential for weak swimmers, older dogs, or first-timers.
• Install a pool alarm that alerts you if anything falls in the water.

✅ 6. Dry and Rinse Off After Swimming
• Rinse your dog after swimming to remove chlorine or salt.
• Dry their ears well to prevent infections, especially in floppy-eared breeds.

🛟 Bonus Tips:
• Never throw your dog into the pool. It creates fear and trauma.
• If your dog panics, stay calm. Use soothing tones, not excitement.
• Make it a positive experience with play and treats!

🌞 Hot Weather = High Risk for Dogs! 🐾💦

As temps rise, so does the danger for our furry friends. Dogs don’t sweat like we do — they rely on panting to cool down, and it’s not always enough in extreme heat. 🥵

🚨 Heatstroke can set in fast and be life-threatening. Signs include:
• Excessive panting
• Lethargy or confusion
• Drooling
• Vomiting or collapse

💧 Hydration is critical! Always provide:
✔️ Fresh, cool water (indoors & out)
✔️ Shade during outdoor time
✔️ Walks early in the morning or after sunset
✔️ No hot pavement – if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws!

Keep them cool, keep them safe. 🐶❤️
