The community came, spoke out, and yet the kill floor proposal STILL passed 💔💔💔

We want our supporters to see that people from every walk of life opposed this project — from vegan animal rescuers to people who raise their own animals for food. Which is part of the reason we feel so strongly about this issue. How could the Board completely ignore the entire community like that? It’s one thing to ignore the vegans — we get it all the time. The fact that they ignored people who blatantly said “we eat animals and STILL oppose this,” is extremely baffling to us.

Could you listen to a woman crying because she’s worried toxic slaughterhouse waste will impact the pond her children play in, and STILL decide to allow the project to go through? Could you listen to someone who paid $22,000 of their own money to pave their small country road for EVERYONE to use, hear their concerns about the damage livestock trailer trucks are going to do, and choose to ignore them anyways? Could you listen to a SCIENTIST talk about the process of Halal slaughter, describe how the animals scream, explain that children growing up nearby would have to hear these sounds, and yet STILL vote to pass this project?

We are completely disappointed in Sacramento County. What is the point of letting the people talk if you aren’t going to listen?

We need people that ACTUALLY represent the communities they claim to serve.

Unfortunately, the Greenfarm Killfloor project has been approved. 💔💔💔

First of all, we wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone that showed up to meetings, emailed our Board Supervisors, and shared our posts. We will NEVER have to say we didn’t try to stop this from happening 💪🏽

We are extremely disappointed by the outcome. It has been clear from the start that the community doesn’t want this. Not one person spoke in favor of this proposal, besides the applicant. When it was time for the final vote, it was a 2:2 tie. The Board has one more member that was not present. They originally agreed to wait for the 5th member to review the records to vote, but then cited a rule that, in the case of a tie, allows them to automatically deny the appeal.

It all felt completely unfair, and everyone in the audience was extremely disappointed. We wish they could use the audience members’ testimonies to break the tie instead. It felt like they don’t care at ALL about the community, and the residents that are directly impacted.

The fight for animals, the planet, and our communities is a lifelong fight. We will continue to rescue and provide exemplary care to animals that are overlooked and undervalued in our world, and we will continue to advocate for people to make more compassionate choices as consumers. Without the high demand for meat and animal products, slaughterhouses wouldn’t have to exist.

We may not have the power to completely change things overnight, or even in our lifetimes. But we absolutely do have the power to vote with our dollar, and only financially support businesses and practices that we align with morally. BDS movements are powerful — we can hold companies accountable for their involvement. We can do the same thing by not supporting animal agriculture.

Meet the other 4 of the Calaveras Cuties!

Mama Jane the Protector: This mama cat is the first to check out a new person and make sure they’re safe. She’d prefer to check you out first, but once she assesses the situation, she’ll sit in your lap and immediately start to purr.

Agatha the Explorer: This girl showed her personality IMMEDIATELY after settling into foster care. She’s extremely curious and LOVES to cuddle! She purrs and sinks into your shoulder as soon as you pick her up. She’s the first of her family to explore anything that comes into the room. She’ll make a wonderful addition to any family.

Emily the Bold: This gal LOVES to play. She’s the first of her crew to turn anything and everything into a toy, no matter what it is! She’s sweet and wildly entertaining!

Virginia the Gentle: This kitten loves love! She’s settle right into your lap as long as you’re calm and inviting. She’s patient with her more active sisters and loves sniffing everything in her environment.

These 4 cuties are all fixed, vaccinated, and ready for their forever homes! While it is cute to see them all happily living together, the 4 can be split up and adopting all 4 together is NOT required. But, how cute would that be?! 😍😍

Our tortoise, Littlefoot, is approximately 17 years old. He is our oldest animal resident at the sanctuary, and he will always be our oldest resident, as his type can live anywhere between 80-120 years old! 🥰🐢

Littlefoot will outlive many of us, which is one of the reasons we focus on building connections with youth — we have Littlefoot’s future in mind 😂😉 (we are mostly kidding)

You will have the opportunity to meet Littlefoot at Harold’s pancake breakfast, coming up on the 29th at 10am! There are still tickets available via the link in our bio or by visiting 🔗onlysunshine.me/events

Less than TWO WEEKS until Harold’s Pancake Breakfast and Birthday Celebration! 🥳🥞🐖

Harold is getting super excited, and so are we! 🥰

Our sweet old guy is turning 14 years old, and we seriously can’t believe it! 🥹 Our founder Kristy rescued Harold from the SPCA in 2013 when he was just 11 months old. He was the first farm animal resident at the sanctuary, before we were even a sanctuary! He is the pig that started it all 🥹

14 is pretty old for a pig! Harold is a Vietnamese potbelly pig. This type of pig typically lives 12-15 years on average, but can easily live to be 15-20 with proper care!

Since Harold is getting up there in age, he does experience some arthritis in his joints. He is on a slew of medications every day + a “magic potion” supplement that gets fed to all of our older/disabled animals. Included in the supplement is a VERY expensive pure CBD pellet. It works WONDERS for our animals with joint issues, and Kristy puts in a lot of extra time researching and making sure the animals always have it available.

The magic supplement mix costs about $150 per month. We have 6 animals total taking the supplement, which means it costs us $25 per animal per month. Aside from that, Harold’s medications cost approximately $70 monthly.

This means that, when it’s all said and done, it costs us about $95 per month to manage Harold’s pain.

This year, all of the funds from Harold’s Pancake Breakfast will be going towards our new barn! So, if you aren’t able to make it to the party but still want to celebrate Harold, consider gifting $5 or $10 towards his care. $25 would cover his supplement for an entire month! He would be SO appreciative 🫶🏽

And if you are coming to Harold’s Pancake Breakfast, THANK YOU for helping us make his day super special. And for giving him the best gift he could ever ask for — a new barn!
