Are Your Dog’s Nails Too Long? 🐾✂️

Doggie nails seem to be overgrown in epidemic proportions these days! If you can hear your pup walking around the house with a click click click, it’s time for a trim.

👉 The claw should not extend past the paw pad (aka toe beans) or touch the ground when your dog is standing.

Both dogs and cats are digitigrades—meaning they walk on their toes, not their heels. When nails are too long, they push the toes up and throw off your pet’s entire posture.

🚨 Overgrown nails don’t just look bad—they hurt! Your pup may shift their weight to avoid pain, leading to joint strain, tendon injuries, and even arthritis over time.

Here’s the tricky part:
If the nails are really long, the kwik (the nerve and blood vessel inside the nail) grows out too. That means you can’t trim them down all at once—but with frequent trims, the quick will recede and the nail can return to a healthy length.

Avocados & Dogs: What You Need to Know! 🥑🐾

Nacho night was always one of my dog's favorite! I would always joke and say he doesn't beg, he just sits and hopes... but he knew he would always get a shred or two of cheese and a nice chunk of avocado.

However, many lists of what not to feed your pups include this luscious green fruit.
So let's take a closer look at both the health benefits and risks of feeding avocados:

The Benefits: The flesh of an avocado is rich in healthy fats, fiber, and vitamins A, E, and B6, which can help maintain a shiny coat, healthy skin, and strong digestion. Avocados also contain antioxidants that support the immune system and reduce inflammation, which is great for dogs with arthritis!

The Risks: The skin and pit of the avocado contain persin, a toxin that can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and other digestive issues. The highest amount is actually found in the leaves of the plant. The pit can also pose a choking hazard and can cause blockages so never give them access to the pits.

Safe Feeding: Only feed small amounts of ripe avocado flesh (without the skin and pit) as an occasional treat. Keep portions small to avoid too much fat, which can lead to weight gain or pancreatitis. Always watch for any signs of discomfort or allergic reactions.

Tip: Store avocados out of reach, as some sneaky dogs will help themselves!
