When I saw this long ago ad posted by Rusty Short yesterday, it brought back some good memories. History in the making for the lovely Holly, presented to perfection by Rusty! I was new to the Akita and the Akita was fairly new to AKC showing in the Working Group before it split out to form the Herding Group. We did not have "clusters" back then. One show per weekend was the norm. Not so easy back then as it is today to rack up wins and numbers this impressive. Holly knew her job.
Judge, Mr. Robert Waters wrote about his experience judging our National that year. His words caught in my head and heart. Could his comments and concerns for the Akita of 40 years ago be valid today? Have we, as breeders today improved type as it was written by the framers of the standard?
Type is all inclusive. I want to focus on the areas of correct structure and movement. This is a large "Working Breed".
From the first line of the AKC standard: General Appearance " Large, powerful, alert with much substance and heavy bone" Then on to Gait: "Brisk and powerful with strides of moderate length".
Whether you are a preservation breeder, fancier or judge, I hope when you see the Akitas presented today that you can find, appreciate and reward correct structure and movement along with the distinct features that are undeniably "Akita".
Thank you, Rusty, for allowing me to share these special memories. There are so many more
