The post everyone has been waiting for… an update on the bear! 🐻

As stated before, the cub is now with Dave at Friends of the Feathered and Furry in Hunter, NY. Dave is the only rehabilitation center in the state that takes black bear. I (Tyffani) was able to check in with Dave via phone call for an update. As small as the cub seemed, it’s actually a yearling! Yearlings tend to leave mom by this point which gives us a good indication on why it was on its own. It is most likely that the bear was hit by a car which is why it was extremely docile and lethargic once Deputy Stoutenburgh found it on the side of the road.

When Deputy Stoutenburgh picked up the cub, it had a head droop indicating a head injury to some degree. After a very thorough examination and some scans, Dave said there is no signs of internal injuries or rabies and likely suffered a concussion. Thankfully, Dave said the bear will make a full recovery and will be with his facility through the summer and released in September!

Everyone from CMWR wants to take a second to thank all of you that have commented, liked, and shared our recent post about the bear cub and gave our page a follow. Wildlife rehabilitation is 100% volunteer and without all of our supporters and community, we couldn’t do what we love to do. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts and remember..if you see an animal in distress, call your local licensed wildlife rehabilitator! 🤍🐰🦊🐻🐿️🦫🐾

These buns had a 10% chance of survival. Its been a labor of love and a lot of attention paid to these three. They are eating grass and clover, and I’m going to start weaning them off formula.

We are

Meet Tonya, Tyffani, and Kayla. (Bob is also a rehabber with us, but he is camera shy!). We have a few volunteers, too!

We rescue and rehabilitate small mammals--squirrels, chipmunks, weasels, woodchucks, opossums, foxes, bobcats--you get the idea!

We cannot rehabilitate raccoons, skunks, or bats. They require a special license that we do not hold. We also cannot rehabilitate large mammal (YET! We are working on this one)--deer, bear, and moose. If we take in an animal we cannot rehab, we have 48 hours to transport it to a licensed (large mammal or RVS) rehabber.

We are volunteers even though we are all licensed through DEC.

Finally, we LOVE what we do! It's not easy sometimes, but we give it our all and will continue to do so. Stop by our booth at the Greene County Youth Fair in July and the Sunflower & Sangria Festival in August. We'd love to say HI!

Transport time!

Last night, I (Tyffani) got a call from a friend who’s a deputy in one of our local counties. During his patrol shift, he found this yearling cub laying on the side of the road, lethargic and unable to walk.

Unfortunately none of us at CMWR hold a large mammal license to rehab this cutie (deer, bear, and moose). However, under our license, we are allowed to transport an animal out of our license category within 48 hours to the correct rehabilitator.

There is only one rehabilitation center in the entire NYS that takes black bears - Friends of the Feathered and Furried in Hunter, NY.

Once I got this bear cub in my possession last night, I kept it safe and cozy overnight until I was able to transport it to FFF this morning. They’ll do a thorough exam and take it from there.

I’m honored to have been involved with this little one’s story. Fingers crossed it makes a full recovery and released back to the wild! 🤞🏻🐻🖤

Happy Father’s Day everyone!

I (Tyffani) took in this little bun caught by cat this morning. The finder, Emily, kept the baby warm and safe until I got it. Thankfully, there are no open wounds but it will still be treated with some antibiotics since cat saliva is toxic to small mammals. 🐰

I would also love to give a shoutout to Emily’s daughter, Elayna, who hand knitted this beautiful little blanket this morning just for this bunny. It is perfect and will be so treasured.

Thank you both for saving this little one and caring for animals! 🤍

Today’s post is brought to you by the number 10.

These babies had a 10% chance of surviving. Their inexperienced momma likely didn’t know enough to dig a hole and create a nest for her babies, so she had them as she hopped along. They likely didn’t get mom’s colostrum, which is so important for their immune system. I knew I had a challenge ahead of me

10 days later, they are warm, eating well, sleeping in their incubator nest, and seem to be content.

They are not out of the woods yet, but they have come so far! Pictures below (one might be bunny butts!) 🐰🐰🐰

Oh, these ‘possums!
