Some dogs bark through a groom. Some dogs wriggle. This one did neither — he simply watched.

Not a single sound the whole session. Just steady, unbroken eye contact that had us double-checking our own work. There's a particular kind of dog that doesn't protest, it supervises, and somehow that is far more unsettling than any barking.

Ask any groomer and they'll tell you the same thing: it is always the small ones.

The big dogs come in, get on the table, and fall asleep halfway through the blow-out. The little ones arrive with opinions and want to discuss each of them. We've had shepherds snore through a full groom and five-pound dogs treat a nail trim as a personal insult.

The smallest dog in the group, and unquestionably the one running it.

Rescues often arrive unsure of everything — unfamiliar smells, unfamiliar hands, a table that moves under them. It can take a few visits before they settle. This one walked in like she'd made the appointment herself, and the others took their cue from her. That happens more than you'd think: one calm dog in the room genuinely makes the morning easier for every other dog in the building.

We've groomed a lot of dogs. This was the first one with a modelling résumé.

And honestly, he was aware of it. He held position through the whole trim, turned his head whenever the clippers moved, and at the end gave us a profile like he'd been photographed a hundred times. Most dogs need a bit of coaxing to sit still for finish work — the detailing around the face is where patience runs out. This one waited for it.

Meet Kevin, who is roughly 40% dog and 60% undercoat. August does this to double-coated breeds, and no amount of brushing at home gets all of it out. A proper deshed isn't a shave — it's a bath, a real blow-out, and then working the dead coat loose until the brush finally comes back empty. Every shop has one. He's on the books often enough that he knows which table is his, who's holding the treats, and exactly how long he can stall at the door before somebody carries him in. This is Rocky. He came to us anxious and genuinely sore, which is a hard combination — a dog in pain doesn't want to be touched, and a dog who doesn't want to be touched is a dog you cannot rush. So we didn't. Lots of breaks, hands where he could always see them, and a groomer who has done this a hundred times with nervous dogs. He left standing taller than he came in, and honestly that's the whole job right there. We spent half this groom just admiring the color on him. It shifts every few inches, which sounds like a fun problem right up until you're the one trying to keep the lengths even across all of it — one blade run over the whole dog would have flattened the entire effect.
