Came in as a small brown cloud. Left with a face.

The trim around the eyes is the last thing we do and it's the thing that changes a dog's entire expression. It's also not purely cosmetic. Hair growing down over the eye is uncomfortable, it collects every bit of debris the day offers, and it's the single thing owners notice least, because it happens so gradually that you stop seeing it.

Everything before that is the boring, necessary order of operations: bath, full dry, brush-out, and only then the haircut. Skip a step and it shows in the finish every time.

This one went home looking like a completely different puppy, and considerably more able to see where it was going.

Turn the sound on for this one. No music, no talking, just water.

The bath gets treated like a preliminary, and it's actually where most of the work lives. Warm water first, then a proper lather worked all the way down to the skin instead of sitting on top of the coat, and then a rinse that goes on considerably longer than feels necessary. Shampoo left behind is the single most common reason a coat looks dull a week after a groom, and it's entirely avoidable if you're not in a hurry.

It takes longer than you'd guess, it's the quietest stretch of our day, and it's the step that decides how everything after it turns out.

This was his first haircut. Ever.

He came in with a coat that had quietly gotten away from everybody, which happens faster than most people are warned about. The soft fluff you bring home turns into real hair somewhere around six or seven months, and if nobody's keeping up with it, it starts holding onto dirt, tangles and a surprising amount of weight.

Once it came off he looked like a different animal. Smaller, brighter, and visibly bouncier by the end of the appointment. We see it constantly. Dogs carry more in their coat than people realize, and they seem to know the second it's gone.

If you've got a puppy who's never been groomed, please don't wait for a problem to make the first appointment. The first one should be short and easy, and it's only easy when there's nothing to fix yet.

This is thirty seconds of the most satisfying part of the whole job.

There's a particular feeling when a clipper moves through a doodle coat that's been properly prepared. No catching, no dragging, just a clean line the entire way down. Groomers genuinely chase that feeling.

The catch is that it only happens on a coat that's been washed, dried all the way to the skin, and brushed out first. On a coat that's dirty or matted, the same blade in the same hands fights you every inch, and the result looks chewed rather than smooth. Same dog, same tool, and the whole difference sits in the prep.

Which is also why we'd much rather see doodles on a regular schedule than rescue them twice a year. A coat kept up with is a pleasure to work on. A coat that's been left is a much harder conversation at the counter.

His owners genuinely thought we'd brought out the wrong dog.

This happens more often than you'd expect at pickup — a proper double-take, a laugh, and then somebody discreetly checks the collar to be sure. When a heavy coat comes off, the actual shape of the dog underneath surprises everybody, and nobody more than the people who live with him.

There's a lot of dog hidden under a long coat. Legs turn out to be longer, faces turn out to be smaller, and the whole animal moves differently once the weight is gone.
