***Update: We have BOTH transports covered. Thank you to Sheila (and her husband who is riding shotgun) for picking up the four kittens from the Bronx. And a big thanks to Michelle who is picking up two just days old kittens from VEG in White Plains for us.***

These kittens were rescued in a Bronx park last night after hours of trying to get them out from where they were wedged into. FDNY refused to help. NYPD arrived and threatened to arrest the rescuer. All kinds of craziness, but in the end she was able to remove all 6 kittens.

Unfortunately, two kittens have passed away overnight. The rescuer has been traveling around NYC by bus and subway trying to find a shelter to accept them, but with NYC Animal Care and the ASPCA Kitten Nursery closed to intakes, she began calling local independent rescuers and was referred to us.

After speaking with the rescuer, we asked her to divert to our friend, Iris, since these babies have not been on a heat source. While Iris will get them warmed up, she has her hands full fostering kittens from the overburdened NYC ACC. We need to get them up to FURRR 911 as soon as possible.

♦️♦️♦️Update 4:45pm: While working on transport for the kittens from the Bronx, we received a call about newborns surrendered to a local Westchester veterinary emergency hospital. The babies are being assessed right now. If stable, these two little ones will be coming to us as well. 😳♦️♦️♦️

Thank you to all who took a moment to guess the species of our latest guests. As if Rockland County doesn't keep us busy enough with all the kittens it sends our way, late last night, we stepped in to care for these four Northern flying squirrels from New City.

Since flying squirrels are nocturnal mammals, a rescuer spent the evening trying to reunite them with their mom. The effort was unsuccessful and these just- born babies required immediate care to warm, rehydrate, and eventually feed them. As we have previously discussed, no newborn babies (kittens, birds, opossums, squirrels, etc) should be left alone outside after dusk. Many predators prefer to hunt at night which puts any baby in danger. Plus, newborns do not have the ability to regulate their own temperature and can easily succumb to hypothermia. And yes, neonates can easily become hypothermic even in this disgustingly hot and humid weather.

I have rehabilitated Eastern grey squirrels (the common squirrels that we see in our region); however, this was my first experience with flying squirrels. That they were "pinkys" (just-born babies who do not yet have fur) just compounded matters. While I knew that flying squirrels were smaller in size than Eastern squirrels, I was not prepared for how tiny they actually were. For someone who deals with newborn kittens year round, it takes a lot for me to be in awe of how tiny a creature is. The smallest baby weighs only 4 grams while the biggest clocks in at 8 grams. In fact, the combined weight of all four squirrels still falls short of being one ounce. 😳

I have definitely faced challenges with this crew. After warming them up in an incubator, they needed to be rehydrated before being fed. I dug out my smallest 30G needles and fretted because my fingers are definity not dainty. It is impossible to hold, pull up the loose skin, and administer subcutaneous in a baby this small, so I drew upon my nursing experience of placing PPD (tuberculin) tests. Today, when it was time to introduce diluted formula for the first time, the fun with the tiny, flimsy 1.8 French feeding tube began. And to tube feed them every 2 hours is sheer joy - insert heavy sarcasm here.

Keep these little fighters in your thoughts. They have an incredibly long road ahead.

I will give you a hint. This is not a kitten. 🤣

We have found transportation. Thank you.

Here we go again. Two sets of kittens were found today at a park in the Bronx. They were huddled together in an indentation/hole in the soil at the base of a tree. The younger litter needs to be bottle fed formula, and FURRR 911 was asked to take them in. The older kittens will stay on with a rescuer in the Bronx.

Just when you think that you are done for the night, but you are sadly mistaken - surprise!

Yesterday morning, maintenance workers at the 105th NYPD Precinct in Queens were landscaping the property. As bags were being thrown in a garbage bin, a worker saw something move and mistook the animal for a rat until he heard the little cry. Searching further, he found three tiny kittens. Since he did not want them crushed by garbage, he placed them in the lid of a cardboard box and left it next to the bin.

At lunchtime, workers put out a can of cat food nearby as a cat was seen in the vicinty. The maintenance workers moved on to another part of the property, but one worker went back to check on the kittens mid-afternoon. The cat food was uneaten. No cat was in sight any longer, and the kittens hadn't been moved. But still, he waited in the hopes that mom would return. That is until he spotted a raccoon walking around not too far from the crying kittens. Being concerned for their safety, he removed the kittens and began making calls to find help for them.

This tiny trio rolled in from Queens just after 9 pm last night. While warm to the touch (thankful that their rescuer listened to advice on how to keep them at an appropriate body temperature), these one day olds were dehydrated, undersized, and underweight. Their weights on arrival were all between 2.6 and 3 oz. Just for reference, the normal weight for kittens at birth ranges from 3.3 - 3.7 oz. Sigh. These kittens have some catching up to do. However, I am happy to report that they all were super hungry and immediately took to the bottle. 😊

Just a quick introduction to our 3 new arrivals from the Bronx today. These kittens were spotted yesterday all huddled together outside of a garage in the Bronx. By the time a rescuer arrived on the scene, the gate to the property was closed and locked.

The rescuer returned this morning to see if the kittens were still there. And they were - in the same spot. While there are many stray cats in the area, the garage workers did not know which cat could possibly be the mom. So now this address is on a trapper's list for TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) so that these cats do not continue to reproduce.

For all the great effort and work that our TNR friends put into trapping, it just never ends. Be a part of the solution. Take the online class to become TNR certified. Help with trapping stray cats in your neighborhood or at work. Volunteer to hold trapped cats prior to surgery or recover them afterward until release. You can help!

As we were arranging transportation for kittens coming in from the Bronx, we received a call from the manager of the Yonkers Animal Shelter asking for help. On Monday, staff arrived to find a box left outside the shelter with ten kittens inside. Going by size, there were two separate litters of different ages. While the older kittens (probably around 8 weeks old) were healthy and eating well, the younger litter was struggling. The six younger kittens were barely eating any wet food, nor did they want to drink from a bottle. One tiny little calico girl had the staff especially concerned because she was so much smaller than any of the others.

While our rescue is getting inundated with new kittens and we normally stick to the cut-off of 4 weeks old or younger for intakes, we agreed to help this family. Boy are we glad that we did because these kittens are drastically lagging in size and weight based on their age. In fact, all the Yonkers kittens are smaller than the 3 kittens who arrived from the Bronx, and the Bronx kittens are about 1 week younger than the Yonkers crew.

While I know that every shelter, rescue group, and independent rescuer is operating beyond capacity at this time of year, it is NEVER acceptable to abandon ANY animal in a box ANYWHERE! This is reprehensible. These animals were lucky that they were not in critical condition, especially in this heat and humidity. If you are the pet owner of the mom cats, you are foolish to believe that there won't be more litters of kittens born. If you feed stray cats and did not want more cats in your yard, well, guess what? These moms will have more litters and possibly even this year. The only way to effectively and humanely combat the cat overpopulation crisis is to have cats neutered, whether they are your pets or strays. You should never think that dumping animals is acceptable!

Update: Transportation has been found, but not before a monkey wrench was thrown into things. While searching for someone to drive the kittens from the Bronx, we got a call from Yonkers Animal Shelter about 5 kittens who needed us. Unfortunately, staffing was tight today so no one could leave work to transport. Luckily, our friend who agreed to pick up the Bronx kittens said that she would also swing by the shelter on her way up to us. I love it when everything comes together.

These kittens were found yesterday at a parking garage in the Bronx. While there are many stray cats in the area, these kittens remained huddled and alone throughout the day. When a rescuer went by at the end of the day, the gate to the property was locked so she returned this morning to see if the situation had changed. She found that the kittens had not moved from the day before.

I know that asking for help with transportation now seems to be an every day thing, but we are fielding numerous calls about kittens every single day of the week. Calls and messages often start around 6:30 am and continue on until 1 - 2 am. While we help when we can, our rescue organization is limited by a lack of resources (foster homes, food, litter, and money to cover meds, vet visits, and neuters).

The crazy thing is that this is NOT even our busiest time of the year yet! Although we do see a ramping up of requests and intakes already, August and September are historically the worst months of the year. I am scared to see what is just around the corner. The anticipation and dread has already begun. 😔

We have found transportation for this sweet little girl. Thank you.

This kitten was left behind under a car in the Bronx today after mom moved all of her other siblings. She was crying her little heart out which is how someone located her. When she arrived at a friend's house, she was so hungry that she was trying to bite the edge of the cardboard box. Unfortunately, that only works if you have teeth to sink into the cardboard. 😹

People often ask me how so many kittens are found when they are such little beings. Well, the answer is their cries. (Sound up for an example) The younger the kitten, the higher pitched and louder their cries are. As they age, kitten cries are still relatively loud, but will decrease in decibel the older they get.

Instinctually, newborn kittens remain silent when their mom is away from the nest searching for food or going to the bathroom. If you are close by, you may hear some soft peeps from them as they awake and adjust position. However, you should never hear loud and consistent crying because these sounds put their lives in danger by broadcasting the location of the nest. Not only may these cries alert humans, but it could bring predators to them as well.

Kitten cries are a protective mechanism. The younger the kitten is the more piercing the cry. When mom is in the area, kittens can summon her by their cry if danger is near. On the other hand, repeated crying over a period of time alerts humans to the fact that kittens are in the area and something is not right, especially if the mother cat is not responding to the cries. The kittens may be indicating hunger or distress. Little ones will literally cry until they fall asleep, but if they wake up and resume crying immediately, then there is a problem which needs to be investigated. Maybe this little tidbit of information will resonate with someone so that I stop getting calls about newborns who have been crying for 1-2 days and are outside alone.

This is the current state of affairs at Empire Harley-Davidson in New Rochelle, NY. The sun has come out revealing a beautiful day. The food truck is here featuring all kinds of wraps. And, of course, the kitties are here to greet any visitors dropping off donations for the rescue food and supplies drive. Remember to come on over before 3 pm today.

I just received this text asking to help out these two little kittens so I put up this post asking for help with transportation. Within 20 minutes, I had not one, but two, offers to pick up these kittens. Talk about record time. FURRR 911 has the most amazing friends and followers.

Even better is that the person transporting today has a connection to our rescue. Her daughter adopted one of our partially sight impaired kitties named Iris in October. Iris the kitty was named after our friend Iris, the cat rescuer in the Bronx. Iris, the cat rescuer, is the person who reached out and has the kittens that need transportation. Lots of little coincidences here, but the bonus was that I got to hear how wonderfully Iris the cat is doing in her new home and how loved she is.
