One of the most common issues we encounter is our clients OVER FEEDING FISH. It is essential to note that a fish's stomach is approximately the size of its eyes. Although they may appear hungry, overfeeding can compromise the health of the fish and the aquarium. Overfeeding fish leads to poor water quality, health issues, and other problems in an aquarium. Excess food decomposes, causing ammonia and nitrite spikes, which are toxic to fish. This can also cause low oxygen levels, cloudy water, algae blooms, clogged filters, and lead to health problems for the fish like fin rot and fatty liver disease. Problems related to water quality include increased ammonia and nitrite, low oxygen levels, pH fluctuations, cloudy water, and algae blooms. Health problems for fish comprise fin rot, fatty liver disease, digestive issues, and obesity. Aquarium maintenance issues include clogged filters and aesthetic deterioration. To prevent overfeeding, feed your fish only what they can consume in 2-3 minutes, follow a consistent feeding schedule, remove any uneaten food with a net or siphon after feeding, and perform regular partial water changes.
