Have you ever wondered why dogs like Glokta have blue eyes when the vast majority (some scientists estimate around 90%) of our canine companions have brown irises? Blue eyes in dogs are much more rare and green eyes are the rarest. Of course, it has to do with genes, and canines with merle coats are more likely to have lighter eyes due to the same gene. The merle gene M is dominant and causes merle or double-merle coat patterns. It's also more likely to cause blue eyes in dogs. Dogs with one, and especially two dominant copies of this gene, are likely to have blue or at least partially blue eyes! Glokta's blue merle coat color certainly helps to explain why he's got those gorgeous big blue eyes!
