ROANOKE, Va. — The Roanoke community has been looking for answers about why police and Animal Protection officers suddenly launched an investigation at City Dogs Boarding & Playcare over the weekend. Those answers are now beginning to come into focus.
According to newly filed court records, the Roanoke Police Department’s Animal Protection and Services Unit is investigating the kennel for possible animal cruelty after officers reportedly found multiple dogs showing signs of heat-related distress during last weekend’s extreme temperatures.
Court documents state that an animal warden responded to the business on Sunday after receiving a report of possible neglect. According to the search warrant affidavit, an employee described one dog as exhibiting symptoms consistent with heat stroke, including convulsions and vomiting.
The search warrant further alleges that several dogs appeared to be suffering from heat distress while housed in kennels and play areas where the ground temperature was reported to be around 85 degrees. The document also describes some dogs as visibly shaking, huddled in the corners of their kennels, and showing signs of significant emotional distress.
Investigators also reported that no visible drinking water was observed inside one warehouse area where dozens of dogs were being boarded. The affidavit further alleges that sewage water and open trays containing cigarette butts were present in areas where dogs had access.
According to the court filing, employees working inside the facility were reportedly “visibly dripping in sweat” and struggling with the heat. On Sunday, temperatures in the Roanoke area reached the low 90s, with heat index values approaching the upper 90s.
Police previously asked pet owners to pick up their dogs from the facility while the investigation was underway. Search warrant records indicate investigators seized kennel assignment paperwork as part of the case.
The court documents also state the business had been the subject of a previous ongoing investigation involving alleged hazardous conditions for animals.
Earlier this week, City Dogs owner Lynda Knezovich said the business is cooperating with investigators and maintained that the dogs in their care are safe. The business has since reopened while the investigation continues.
It’s important to note that these allegations come from court documents filed in support of a search warrant. No criminal charges have been announced at this time, and the investigation remains ongoing.
