Howdy friends, colleagues, and fellow animal lovers!
I'm thrilled to share some incredibly important news regarding the future of veterinary acupuncture and the integrative care I strive to provide for our beloved animals. As a member of both the American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture (AAVA) and the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS), we've been working for decades to see veterinary acupuncture recognized as a formal specialty. After years of diligent effort, it looks like our hard work is finally paying off!
The American Board of Veterinary Acupuncture (ABVA) is currently petitioning the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) for recognition as a veterinary specialty organization. This is a monumental step towards establishing consistent standards of training, practice, and professional oversight in veterinary acupuncture, ultimately ensuring the highest quality of care for our patients.
Acupuncture is a versatile medical modality, practiced by thousands of veterinarians worldwide, with applications across many species and disciplines. It significantly enhances outcomes in various veterinary specialties, particularly in managing pain, aiding in cancer care, improving performance, and supporting neuro-recovery and fertility. The AVMA has recognized acupuncture as a valid medical modality requiring rigorous training since 1988. Its diagnostic methods, technical skills, and foundational physiology are distinct and not encompassed within any current AVMA-recognized specialty.
This is where you come in! The ABVA is welcoming public feedback to help shape the future of veterinary acupuncture. Your support is incredibly important to demonstrate the widespread need and demand for this valuable medical modality.
Please submit your public comments no later than 11:59 p.m. on August 12, 2025. All comments must be submitted by email to [email protected] with the subject line "Public comment - Acupuncture Specialty."
Let's step up and speak out to ensure that not only our pets can continue to receive the very best of integrative care, but that others around the country and the world may also have access to do the same as this form of medicine becomes more readily available to the general public.
Thank you for your consideration and your continued support of my practice, our profession, and this vital sector of the veterinary industry!
B'ahava,
- Dr. LR
