Jupiter was sadly surrendered by his owner. He once had a home and family but now he finds himself all alone. He is timid but that is with all good reason. In the right home Jupiter will become the sweet cat we know he is. Please check here for updated adoption hours.
What my friends at ACC say about me:
I have lived with over 10 cats.
I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some feline body language together!
I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace.
I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am.
I'm described as friendly, active, playful, and quiet.
A volunteer writes:
Jupiter was described as friendly, active, playful, and quiet. He enjoys playing hide and seek, pouncing on and chasing toys, and also playing with water. He liked interactive playtime once and also enjoyed using a scratching post.
He is fully litterbox trained.
In the shelter, Jupiter tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed here and may be intimidated by small children. He is independent and may need time to warm up to his new, forever home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.

Hello, my name is Jupiter. My animal id is #177857. I am a desexed male black cat at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 8/21/2023, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving.
Jupiter is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 8/26/23
Jupiter was huddled in his litter box. I offered him treats and toys, but received no reaction from him. A couple of potential adopters were interested in getting to know him, but I could not coax him to come out of the litter box and display himself to them. I ended the interaction and went back later. I petted him with a scratcher, but he began to grumble, so I stopped right away. He has only been in the shelter for a few days, so he may just need more time to acclimate.
8/29/23
Lying on top of kuranda bed, body and face tense, pupils dilated and tail wrapped around body. He watches each treat offered, ears shifting forward and face softening -- he is curious about the treats. He does not eat them as I'm watching but when I check on him shortly afterwards all the treats have been eaten. I speak to him softly & slow-blink before ending the session - will continue to build positive associations!
9/3/23
Jupiter was curled up in his bed. I spoke to him and he hissed at me as I tried to pet him. I ended the interaction, leaving some treats for him to discover later. He stayed behind the covered half of his kennel the whole time I was in the room.
9/7/23
Lying in cat bed upon approach, body and face tense, ears tilted and pupils dilated. He makes and maintains hard eye contact when spoken to, then he hisses when offered treats. Although he sniffs them (and the catnip toy offered) he remains too focused on me to engage with them any further. I do not push petting at this time.
9/14/23
Lying in hidey box upon approach, body and face tense, ears forward and pupils dilated. He does not react to treats or enrichment at this time. He hisses and maintains eye contact with hard expression throughout our session. Not interested in further interaction at this time.
9/17/23
Jupiter is improving. He was lying in a cardboard box, nearly covered by a big, crocheted blanket. I spoke to him and put treats in the box. He did not respond or move out of the box, so I ended the interaction. The last time I saw Jupiter, two weeks ago, he hissed at me, so he really is more relaxed than he was.
9/20/23
In his box with only his head visible, ears forward and face tense, eyes wide and dilated. He remains tense and frozen when I open the cage door and offer him chicken in a tray near his box.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Timid,Independent,Skittish
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Please see behavior flyer for more information.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Jupiter was lying on top of his kuranda bed as the assessor approached, body and face tense and pupils dilated. Jupiter made eye contact with wide eyes when spoken to and he remained frozen in place as the kennel door opened. Jupiter tolerated petting along his head and body while turning his head to watch the assessor's hand with wide eyes and pulling his tail tight around his body. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress.
Jupiter tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
