This weekend we attended the second Maryland Trackapeake UBT event where Millie and Hank both passed their UBT 2 tracking tests. Travis from Oak Hill's Denali organized an awesome event. We learned a lot, met other trackers, ate great food, and came home with a couple ribbons. If you're a tracker in or close to Maryland or want to learn more about blood tracking, I highly recommend attending the next event. Thanks to our test judges, Marlee Malmborg and Dave Dainton and our apprentice judges, Travis Frank and Jack Daniel Zimmerly. And thanks to all the other judges and apprentices that shared their knowledge and experience with us. We will be applying the things that we learned this off-season and next deer season.

The 2025/2026 season is over and it has been our best season to date. Millie had her most recoveries and best recovery rate so far. I'm proud of Millie's success and Hank got to track more this season too. Here are the highlights for the season. Thank you to everyone who trusted us to help you to get your deer on the tailgate. We will be spending the off-season training, attending tracking seminars, and taking tracking tests. We are looking forward to having a great 2026/2027 season.

This was our first time tracking in the snow. It was a pretty cool experience. This was a suspected back whack and we didn't end up with a deer, but I'm glad I gave it a shot because Millie put in some really solid work. The deer was shot with a 350 Legend from about 85 yards yesterday evening. He dropped immediately, but a few minutes later jumped up and ran off. No blood, no hair. It snowed around 2 inches overnight. We started on the track around the 16 hour mark. We didn't have a solid starting point, but we got Millie close enough that after a few circles she took up a trail. After awhile she started tracking hot. I wasn't sure she was on our deer but she had looked pretty confident up to this point. Then we spotted a bare spot in the snow. A deer had obviously been bedded there. She picked up the pace and kept barking. We now had deer tracks in the snow, so we knew we were on a deer, but still not 100% sure it was the right deer. 1.5 miles into the track we spot a tiny speck of blood in one of the hoof prints. We had been pushing the right deer enough to get him bleeding. If there hadn't been snow on the ground I don't think we would have noticed the bed or the blood. We continued on, crossing freezing stream after freezing stream. Millie's leash was a frozen rope and she was completely caked in snowballs. She pushed on for 2.25 miles to the edge of the property. We decided that we had enough confirmation to call this deer non recoverable and we called the track. Millie was not happy. She wanted to keep going. She is one tough little dog and a deer tracking machine.

We went 1 for 2 today. The hunter shot a buck and doe from the same spot on public land yesterday. Millie immediately picked up the trail from the hitsite and started working. We didn't know which deer she was tracking. After awhile I decided to restart her. After restarting her she quickly took us to the buck which we had walked right by the first time. It was tough to get her to focus on tracking the doe after finding the buck, so we dragged the buck out of the area and I switched over to running Hank. Hank kept finding where the buck was and trying to take the trail that the buck was dragged out on. I suspected that Millie had been tracking the doe before I restarted her, so I took Hank to the trail that she had been on. He picked up on the trail and took the exact path that Millie had tracked. He continued past where I had pulled her off and kept on going for awhile. Eventually he started barking and tracking hot like we had jumped it. Both tracks were about 17 hours old.

Wanting to have a tracking dog for personal use and to track for family and friends is what got me intrested in tracking. Millie and I tracked this buck for my brother and nephew this morning. He was shot yesterday evening. There was no blood or any sign that the deer was hit, but he knew his gun was dead on. I told him to leave it over night and I would put Millie on it in the morning.
