Did you know that puppy training has a timeline? It does! And if you skip the early stages, the obedience work is harder later.

Sure, your 8–16 week old puppy can learn to sit for treats and potty outside, but skip the formal obedience for a minute.

This is your socialization window. Let your pup experience different surfaces, hear different sounds, see people, calm dogs, and enjoy car rides. What they learn (or don't) during this stretch sticks. Often for life.

I don't worry about formal obedience until they're about 6 months old. Until then, I spend time relationship-building, drive-building, and getting the foundation built. Rushing it is like asking a 5-year-old to act like a 12-year-old — it's not fair and it doesn't work.

We just got back from a wonderful weekend in Lubbock TX with Heather Rothwell Red Dirt Mantrailing West Texas

It was so wonderful to bring in a new group of trailers and trail with students one more time before it gets too hot. We will be back after summer time! My phone storage was completely full so I didnt get to take many photos/videos.

Huge thank you to Lit Brews for helping us host the intro class!

It's almost summer and you know what that means in North Texas: the streets are turning into lava and you're afraid to take your pup for a walk.

Well, the good news is that you still have options -- but only if you're smart.

Here's a handy chart to give you an idea how hot the pavement gets, and be sure to read all about it in my blog: https://cowboyco-training.com/dfw-dog-owners-hot-pavement-burns-paws-fast/

Sundays are a good day to just be with your dog.

No plans, no agenda, just a walk, some play time, and maybe even a short road trip for a pupcup.

The training matters — but so does the relationship. Always remember that whole point of teaching your dog to behave is so you can enjoy being around each other. Today's a good day to remember that.

Rest up. Big week ahead. 🐾

Dog training is like working with goats: you're trying to convince another species that listening to you is their idea.

Okay, so maaaybe the puppies aren't as tricky as goats, but a lot of the best training happens when the dog decides that listening was, in fact, their idea.

Empowering lives, one service dog at a time 🐾

Behind every service dog lies a story of trust, loyalty, and support. These incredible companions transform lives, providing the independence and assistance their handlers need to thrive.

But not all dogs have what it takes for service work. Learn more about how trainers like me figure out if the dog you have can handle the stress.

On this Memorial Day, enjoy your families, friends, and outdoor activities — but I also hope you'll take a moment of silence for those service members who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

Plot twist: the guilty look isn't always guilt. Here are a few reasons dogs give you the side-eye:

1. They're being playful! Some dogs side-eye right before bolting off in zoomies.

2. They're showing they're not a threat. Dogs don't always like full eye contact because it can be interpreted as a threat. So, the side-eye is a way to look without being rude.

3. Resource guarding. You may see this when your dog doesn't want to give up a toy or a bone to you or another dog. This one's a little trickier and you have to know your dog to know whether it's a problem.

There are more reasons and if your dog is always giving you the side-eye, I can help you figure out what's going on. Then fix it if it needs fixing.
