Seeing the world in a safe way!! Lola getting some exposure to new sights and sounds at 11 weeks.

The first 14 weeks of your puppies life are critical! This is their socialization period. A period where they can develop into a confident, awesome adult doggo, or have issues that will be much harder to correct later due to lack of socialization. You don’t have control of your pups first 8 weeks of life as they should be where they were born during that time, but you can control the 8-14 weeks! This is tricky though, because pups don’t have all of their shots, meaning they have exposed immune systems. A lot of people will tell you not to bring them anywhere during this time to protect them. Although well meaning, this advice is not correct. Vets have concluded that way more dogs are put down later in life Due to behavioral issues than because of parvo or a communicable disease. However, letting your pup run around everywhere in public and meeting random dogs and strangers is not correct either.

What we should do is let our puppy observe new environments, people, and things safely! This could be taking your puppy on car rides, rolling down your window in a busy area and letting them listen and see new sounds and sights. It could also be taking them to Home Depot or Tractor Supply, putting a p*e pad down in a shopping cart, and pushing them around the store, observing the people and products from a safe space, and giving out treats generously to positively associate new experiences with good things.

General rule, we want to take them in public as much as possible without putting their paws on the ground! We can also set up play dates with other dogs and people that we KNOW haven’t been exposed to communicable diseases as well. So, let your puppy become confident by being socialized in their first 14 weeks! Let’s just do it safely.

The wait cue is such an important one.. Want to stop door dashing? Teach them wait. Keep them in the same spot while you tie your shoe? Teach wait!

All you do is get your doggie in a sit. After they sit, start to reach down to put a treat on the floor. If they get out of the sit before you get to the ground, lift your treat up and start over. Reward only when they let you get your treat fully to the floor! Once they can do that, add distance, distraction, and duration

It’s that little plop down…. You have to allow your doggo to think when asking for a command. It can take a dog up to 10 seconds to process a cue. Ask once!

Check out this little guy that just turned 7 weeks... Really, it's never too early to start with the basics! Teaching your puppy attention should be the very first thing your pup should learn! If you can't get your pup to "watch you", then you really can't move forward with other behaviors.

How to teach:

The capturing technique is the best tool to use for this behavior. Capturing is essentially taking a picture of the behavior you like!

1. Wait for your puppy to make eye contact with you.
2. As soon as they make eye contact, "capture" by marking the behavior (with a clicker or verbal marker)
3. Reward that eye contact with a treat!
4. When the pup starts regularly making eye contact on their own, start saying the verbal cue right before you lock eyes
5. Gradually add distance, duration, and distraction!

The verbal cue can be either watch me, the doggos name, or whatever you want it to be!

Super easy to teach and the most important behavior a pup should know as it can be used to get your dog's attention at busy places, whenever you want them to pose for pictures, and any other time you need your pup's attention!
