Spent a few days at the Oregon Taxidermy Association show in Klamath Falls. I got to scribe for the mammal judge, and doing so was such an incredible learning experience.
I came home feeling really inspired and can’t wait for next year!

This was my very first soft mount, which if you’re not familiar, is basically a stuffed animal. The head is on a form and there is clay in the feet and then you can give it varying degrees of wire armature so it can be posed. Then fill with pillow stuffing!
This is a ranch raised fox and I believe this color morph is something like “opal glow.”
But… here’s the thing, the more experience I get, the more I want to hide my old stuff in a drawer!
Isn’t that true with every new skill we learn though? And I promised you behind the scenes, so here it is!

This was fun to work on, this elk was my husbands harvest from a couple years ago. A three year old, they are big bodied with lots of meat, but their antlers are not as big as the more mature bulls. They’re called “rag horns.”
Have you had wild elk to eat? It is hands down my most favorite thing to eat.

Why big game you ask? Because I suffer from a special kind of delusion known as “how hard can it be?” Many of my fellow Alaskans are similarly affected.
But more seriously, I knew that if I could succeed at big game head heads, I could realistically tackle any aspect of taxidermy.
Here are my first game heads, waiting on finish work.
