07/29/26 Update: Harley is home safe! While her family was out hanging flyers a call came in with a sighting and they were able to secure her!

Missing Dog!! Female, , 7/26/26, "Harley" is a friendly Boxer, 7 years old/80 lbs., with a brown coat and white on paws and chest. Harley is missing from the area of Main Street and Settlers Drive near Star Market.

8/1/26 Bolt missing from Middleboro is home safe! He got away from his family last weekend when his collar broke and he was just too scared to come back. Unfortunately his family had to head home to CT last Sunday. Bolt stayed close to the campground and never ventured far, even sleeping at the cabin his family stayed at. He was a true beagle, always coming back for food and probably finding scraps at all the campsites! Even helping himself to leftover burgers at a home up the road the 2nd night while they were cleaning up. This sweet boy had everyone’s hearts. He was adopted 2 years ago after being found as a stray in TN where he had made himself a den in a barn and had a shock collar embedded in his neck!
His family took the 3 hour each way trip 3 times this past week. Most of the time they were within feet of him for most of the day but he would just whimper and run off again. The other night as they were sadly packing up to leave again, he ran right into his mom’s arms, knowing it was time. This is also a testament to patience and coordination, as well as putting their trust in us when they couldn’t physically be there.
He made dozens and dozens of trips to the trap and loved having his picture taken! A major thank you to MDM Volunteer Ashley F, Carey K for their help, to Kayk B for being an extra set of boots on the ground…hanging flyers, going to the campground each night to spread the word to all the visitors to let him be and rebait the trap. Thanks to Middleboro ACO Maddie for making sure he always had water and food and being ready on moment’s notice if he was trapped, everyone who called in sightings, and most importantly the wonderful folks at KOA Middleboro…Bob, Martin, CJ, and all the others whose names we may have missed, but everyone was a HUGE help and their allowance of us to set up at the campground, spread the word, let bolt settle, and their support of Bolt’s family was immensely valuable. It truly takes a village. Sleep well tonight Bolt…We know we all will and your family will!

🧠 𝐁𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 🚨

😞 It takes very little knowledge of learning theory to 𝕤𝕦𝕡𝕡𝕣𝕖𝕤𝕤 behaviour.

🔻You don’t need to understand canine body language.
🔻You don’t need to understand emotions.
🔻You don’t need to understand motivation.
🔻You don’t need to know how dogs learn.
🔻 You certainly don’t care about welfare, or wellbeing.

And your certainly don’t need any qualifications for this 🫥

😒 All you need is to make the consequence unpleasant enough that the dog decides the behaviour isn’t worth repeating.

😖Pain.
🫣Fear.
🫤Discomfort.
🫨Intimidation.

These can 💯 suppress behaviour in almost any living creature. With enough of pain / discomfort/ fear / indicating you can force a living being into such withdrawal that … they stop doing anything at all.

That isn’t remarkable.

It’s simply how punishment works. Doh.

😱 Because suppression often produces an immediate, visible change, it can look incredibly effective.

A dog that was barking, pulling, growling or lunging suddenly stops. To an observer, it appears the problem has been “fixed.”

But the question we should really be asking is … has anything actually been taught? Or … what has my dog learnt ?

⇩⇩⇩⇩⇩⇩⇩⇩⇩⇩⇩⇩⇩⇩⇩⇩⇩⇩⇩

🐶 Training should be about teaching.

Teaching means giving a dog new information, new skill set.

* What should I do instead?
* How do I earn reinforcement?
* How can I cope in this situation?
* How do I make better choices?

🤔 A dog cannot understand an alternative behaviour unless somebody actually teaches it. And teaching requires significant amount of skill, and knowledge.

⚠️ Simply stopping one behaviour does not automatically create another.

⚠️ Suppression will hide problems rather than solve them.

If the underlying cause is still there ➡️ fear, anxiety, frustration, pain, excitement or uncertainty, these causes remains unchanged, even if the outward behaviour disappears.

The absence of behaviour is not the absence of emotion.

Ask yourself this…

🙄 If a behaviour has genuinely been taught (as it should have been in training) …

Why must the dog continue wearing:
• a prong collar?
• an electronic collar?
• a head halter used for continual physical control?
• a slip lead requiring repeated leash corrections?

🐕 If the dog truly understands the skill, has practised it in many environments, and has been reinforced until it becomes reliable…

Shouldn’t the training eventually become independent of those tools?

Training aids do have legitimate uses in some contexts, but a teaching method should aim to reduce reliance on them, not require them indefinitely to maintain behaviour.

🌱 Teaching creates understanding.

🫤Suppression creates avoidance.

🤗One builds confidence.

The other builds compliance through avoidance of more pain, more fear, more discomfort …

🚨They are not the same thing.

That is the difference between controlling behaviour… and truly teaching it.
