😭💔 She’s not even a year old… and Artemis may be facing surgery all over again - a THIRD time! 😭💔
We finally made it home around 3 AM after rushing Artemis to the emergency vet tonight.
Unfortunately, the update is not the one we were hoping to share.
The x-rays showed no healing at all in her leg. Just two weeks ago we were told everything was “looking great,” but tonight the vet showed us that the bones are not connecting and there are no signs of healing yet. The pins also appear to be too far out of place, which may be part of the problem.
When the scab was removed, the vet discovered dead tissue underneath caused by the pin irritating the area for some time.
Right now Artemis has:
• A bandage with a drainage area alongside the pin
• The pin capped with rubber so it cannot cut anything if the bandage slips
• Strict crate rest again with only potty breaks
She is now on several medications to help her through this difficult stage of recovery:
• Acetaminophen/Codeine for pain
• Clavamox antibiotic
• Clonidine to help with anxiety and keep her calm during recovery
Our next steps will be:
• Bandage change at the vet on Sunday
• Trying to get Artemis into her surgeon as soon as possible
• Repositioning the pin and reevaluating the repair
• Determining if the surgery may need to be redone
Right now it feels like we are back at square one with recovery — hot and cold compresses, strict crate rest, and limited movement.
This sweet girl has already endured more than most puppies ever should, yet she continues to fight through it all.
💗 We also want to give a huge thank you to New River Veterinary Emergency Services for taking such incredible care of Artemis tonight. Their team was patient, compassionate, and incredibly thorough, taking the time to listen, answer every question, and explain everything in detail. We are so grateful for their kindness during such a stressful night.
As you can imagine, this emergency visit and the possibility of additional surgery means more unexpected medical bills for Artemis.
