Ruff Start Rescue is looking for fosters to open their homes to animals in need. We also ask that you treat your foster animal the same as if it were your own.

The animals depend on people to open their hearts and homes to them and care for them until they are adopted. An RSR foster's responsibility is to love, feed, play, exercise and provide social interaction for the foster animal. We ask that you take the animal to vet appointments and handle any medical tasks such as giving daily medications. It's easy to get started! The first step is to fill out the foster signup form. Then you will hear from an RSR representative so you can learn more about what fostering entails and discuss any questions or concerns you have before bringing your first foster animal home. We are excited to save lives with you!

Big news from the office 📣 Our beloved office kitty Molly is turning in her badge! She has worked hard here: inspecting ankles, supervising every chair, and approving every lap that sits still long enough. 🧡 FOSTER NEEDED: Meet Garfield, the Sweet Orange Guy Looking for His Next Chapter! 🐾

Garfield 🐱 is a 2-year-old ginger gentleman, and a home renovation turned his life upside down. His person remodeled a rental property, and after the changes Garfield could no longer keep his job as the resident office cat 🏢. Now this handsome boy needs a cozy foster home where he can land while he waits for his forever family.

🐾 EXPERIENCED FOSTER NEEDED: Meet Jack, a Lap-Loving Senior Looking for a Safe Place to Land 💛

Jack is a 13-year-old Yorkie/Maltese mix, roughly 15 pounds of scruffy blond fluff with ears that flare out to the sides like little wings. He recently lost both of the people he shared his life with. 💔. His extended family loves him dearly, but their dogs are younger and bigger, and that isn’t the right fit for a senior whose whole world just changed.

Outside of a few specific situations (explained below), Jack is all heart. He adores people, even ones he’s just met, and his favorite ways to spend a day are curled up on a lap, snuggling, playing with toys 🧸, heading out for a walk 🦮, or keeping you company at your feet. We’re sharing every detail below so his foster knows exactly what to expect and can help him succeed.

Here’s what you need to know about Jack 👇:

⚠️ Important Behavior Info: If Jack has something he really wants and a person tries to physically take it, he can react intensely by lunging, snapping, or going after hands and feet. The same can happen if someone grabs an item from him, physically moves him, picks him up when he’d rather stay put, or uses a foot to block or push him away. His family says he has never broken skin on a person or a dog, but these reactions can be startling if you aren’t ready for them. Please don’t let his small size and sweet face lead you to underestimate this. ⚠️

📈 Progress So Far: This behavior developed later in his life, and he’s been doing better when his people skip physical confrontation and instead call him away or give him a verbal cue.

🧠 What His Foster Needs: Someone experienced and comfortable with management and positive reinforcement. That means trading him for items, calling him away, never pulling things out of his mouth, and respecting his space instead of forcing him physically.

🏡 Family Vibe: An adult-only home or one with older kids is the safest placement for Jack.

🐕 Dog Friends: Jack has lived around plenty of dogs and usually did well. He did have ongoing tension with one large German Shepherd, where he would sometimes start things by going after her or grabbing her fur. 🐱 Cats: He used to chase cats and hasn’t been around any in about 8 years, so cats are unknown and not recommended without careful management.

🏠 House Manners: Housebroken and neutered. He is not crate trained and is used to having free run of the house, which he’s been trusted with when home alone.

🩺 Health: Jack has some skin and digestive sensitivities and takes supplements for them. He had a vet appointment scheduled for October 28.

🌱 Settling In: Any animal can act differently during the first few days somewhere new, and Jack has been through a lot of change. His foster should be ready to give him time and space to decompress and find his routine.
