When you breed dogs, you spend months planning every detail. You schedule appointments, prepare supplies, and do everything possible to give mom and puppies the best start in life. But sometimes, despite the best plans, things don’t go the way you expected.
We were so excited to welcome Cannoli’s final corgi litter into the world. All of her vet appointments were scheduled, and we thought we had everything carefully planned out. Unfortunately, the day of her C-section brought unexpected complications for mom and the loss of a puppy.
Cannoli and her puppies came home that Monday, but we were told that she was too weak to nurse her babies. We immediately stepped in, setting alarms and tube feeding around the clock to make sure every puppy got what they needed. The following day, Cannoli showed some improvement, but she was still only allowed limited nursing time, so the supplemental feedings continued.
Then by Friday, Cannoli took a turn for the worse and we found ourselves back at the vet office. We came home with a long list of medications and a guarded prognosis. Because of those medications, Cannoli could no longer nurse the puppies at all, and we were instructed to completely separate her from them.
Enter Ember… Cannoli’s longtime arch-nemesis.
We knew that even if Ember couldn’t fully provide for the puppies nutritionally, she would keep them warm, clean, comforted, and loved. And that’s exactly what she did. (Though there were definitely a few moments when she looked at us like, “Whose damn babies are these and why am I taking care of them?” 😂)
Together, we figured it out. Ember handled the mothering duties, and we handled the feeding schedule. Every 2-3 hours, day and night, alarms went off and bottles and tubes came out. It wasn’t easy, but these little puppies were worth every sleepless night.
Fast forward five weeks, and we’re thrilled to say that Cannoli has made a full recovery. The puppies are thriving, healthy, chunky, and full of personality. We couldn’t be more grateful.
A huge thank you to Ember for being the most unexpected foster mom and stepping up when we needed her most. (Although we’re pretty sure Cannoli still isn’t impressed with your involvement. 😆) But deep down we all know you are a much better role model than Cannoli 😜. You can’t go wrong with a Golden Retriever raising you.
And of course, thank you to Dr. Webb and the entire team for taking such wonderful care of Cannoli throughout this journey.
So, with grateful hearts and one incredible story behind them, we’d like to officially introduce the Pastry Puff Corgi puppies:
