How did we end up with laminitis! Again? This shows Fay normal, happy, active, fresh from a workout in the fall of 2020 and getting one of her “safe” treats from Uckele, one month before onset. This boarding facility, while expensive and magnificent was very poorly run, with inadequately trained and inexperienced staff. We determined that Fay had been fed another horses sweet feed intermittently- probably over a several month period. The individual bags of grain/pellets/supplements marked clearly with each horse’s name and stall number must have all looked the same to the young man feeding them, so he would grab a bag, and dump it in the feed bucket without checking. I found at times all three of my mares had the wrong feed.
Lesson learned: Never make assumptions your boarding facility won’t make the same type of mistake, and be sure to go overboard doing your own staff training, marking/differentiating feed in multiple ways, putting up notices, or just doing it yourself.
