Turns out I share my birthday with something pretty special. 🌈🐾

October 27 is Día de los Mu***os for Pets. Families light a candle, set out a photo, and leave a favorite treat, because it's said our pets who've crossed the rainbow bridge come home to visit.

Dogs have always been the guides in this story. The ancient Xolo was believed to lead souls through the afterlife, which sounds about right. They've been leading us around our whole lives anyway.

When you've groomed as long as I have, you've loved and lost a lot of dogs. So tonight I'm lighting a candle for Bandit and Bailey, and remembering so many 🥲

At the end of the day, love doesn't leave when they do. (And since it's my birthday, I'm taking it as a sign.)

Tell me the name of a pet you're thinking of tonight. I'd love to remember them with you. 💛

Friendly doesn’t mean “I want to be friends with everybody.” 🐾

Your dog is allowed to have preferences. They’re allowed to want space. They’re allowed to walk right past another dog without saying hello.

And saying “no thanks” to an interaction doesn’t make them unfriendly, untrained or unsocialized.

Sometimes being a good dog parent means being the one willing to say no for them.

Your dog doesn’t owe everyone access to them just because they’re friendly. ❤️

Anybody else have a friendly dog who is a little… ummmm selective? 😂

This is why I’m such a believer in starting grooming training early.

Short sessions. Lots of positive experiences. No waiting until there’s a problem that has to be fixed.

Today Moxie was literally waiting for Kingston to finish because she wanted her turn. 😂

That’s the goal. Grooming shouldn’t feel like something we have to battle through. It can be something they’re comfortable with, confident about, and even excited to do. 🐾

I’ve absolutely brushed my dogs outside and left the fur for the birds. It felt harmless and even a little helpful. But here’s what I didn’t know.
Topical flea and tick treatments can leave pesticide residue on a dog’s coat. When birds collect that loose fur and use it to line their nests, the eggs and baby birds may be exposed too.
A study of fur-lined bird nests found flea-treatment insecticides in the nesting material. Higher concentrations were associated with more unhatched eggs and dead chicks.
This is not a reason to stop protecting your dog from fleas and ticks. Talk with your veterinarian about the right prevention for your dog. It is simply a reminder that if your dog uses a topical treatment, collect the loose coat after brushing and put it in the trash instead of leaving it in the yard.
Brush outside but bag the fur. Protect the birds. 🐾
