Everyone wishes their pets would live forever. It seems like one day they come into our homes and the next thing we know they're gray around the muzzle.

Often the signs of sickness or old age are subtle.  That's why we need to our dogs best advocates, noticing small changes in their behavior, sleep patterns, appetites, or movements. Regular checkups are essential as well to screen for changes in health and discuss any concerns with your veterinarian. If your dog is becoming a senior, (7-9 years depending on the breed) consider semi-annual wellness exams and more frequent blood work.

Summer's in full swing, and while we all love to get outside with our dogs, it's important to remember that our dog's ability to lose heat may not be as efficient as ours. As soon as temperatures are in the 70s, it may be unsafe for some dogs, especially very large breeds, senior or overweight dogs and brachycephalic breeds.

Watch for these signs of overheating:
- large spade-shaped tongue
- excessive panting or difficulty breathing
- lying down or acting sluggish

Also notice if your dog is lifting up their paws. It may be an indication that the surface is too hot.

So head out early, pack lots of water and enjoy some summer fun with your dogs! 🌞 🐕

Summer is finally here! And with it, comes more outdoor activities, including lots of walks with our dogs. But have you ever wondered "Is there such a thing as too much exercise for our dogs?"

Our dogs are individuals, so there isn't one correct answer. Here are some things to consider when thinking about how often and how long to walk your dog:

- Age: adolescent and mid-aged dogs need more exercise than young puppies and seniors

- Breed and genetics

- Fitness level

- Medical conditions

- Weather: take shorter walks if it's extremely hot or cold, especially on warm pavement

** Most importantly, Is your dog enjoying their walks? **

You know your dog better than anyone else. Pay attention to body language and notice if your dog is getting anxious, tired or overheated. Some days a little playtime, a swim or a short outing somewhere new might be a nice change of pace!

This week the American Humane Society will celebrate Be Kind to Animals Week, an annual event that encourages compassion and kindness towards animals.

One of the kindest things we can do for our pets is to monitor their well-being and keep them at a healthy weight.  It's easy to do by feeding a complete and balanced diet, using low calorie, healthy treats and encouraging exercise and a variety of activities to keep them lean! When we look at our dogs we should be able to see their waist and easily feel their ribs when we pet them. Use this handy graphic as a guideline, and find some fun ways to get moving with your pets!

Spring brings warmer weather, longer days, emerging flowers… and allergy season. The same environmental factors that affect us humans, such as dust, grass clippings, and pollen, are also common causes of allergy symptoms in our dogs. If you notice your dog scratching frequently, especially around the ears, backside, and under their chest and belly, licking their paws, or rubbing their eyes and face, they may be suffering from allergies.

Here are some tips to reduce exposure to pollen and other common environmental allergens:
-- limit time outside
-- rinse feet and ankles with a hose
-- wipe coat with a damp microfiber cloth after being outside
-- place a clean sheet over their bed every day
-- vacuum and mop floors more frequently

While food allergies are uncommon in dogs, adjusting their diet can help to manage allergy symptoms. Select foods without common allergens and add supplements that help to decrease inflammation and support overall skin health.
If symptoms persist, talk to your vet about the possibility of allergy testing. Your veterinarian is the best resource for properly diagnosing and treating the cause of your dog’s itchy skin.

Now get out there and enjoy the warmer weather with your best friend!
