Temperament testing started today for my two oldest litters.
I should be narrowing down my choices this week then I'll start sending out reservation forms to my approved adopters on the waitlist.

The other batch of babies. These little hippos are so loud. I can always tell when mom has been out of the nest for a snack because upon her return it's an absolute cacophony of screaming piglets fighting over the best ni**le.

I know technically rat babies are "pups" or sometimes they are referred to as "kittens/rittens" but I just can't land on a solid word I like.
Until then they will beans, hippos, piglets and who knows what....

Beans has been doing a great job with her kids!
She's still pretty scared but I think we are making progress.
I can't tell definitively but from the looks of these babes I'm thinking we will have albino/Himalayan/marked siamese as well as the black and russian blue varigated. Mostly top ear, couple of funky dumbo ears.

We said goodbye to Custard today. She was an amazing auntie, and rat ambassador. Although she was not in our breeding program, she helped to raise babies and teach the rats their place in the mischief. Her favorite place was in Auntie Sam's hair. Many of you met her while she served her time as ambassador at the shop. It won't be the same without her.

Absolutely, 100%, swear to the rat gods, last litter and I'm on break!
Cheesburgers retirement litter. A couple small babes im keeping an eye on here. I *think* I finally got my beige girl.

Cheeseburger is doing a wonderful job and was reluctant to take a break while I did health checks. Very devoted mother, just like last time.

I don't breed my girls more than twice. So far that seems like the right call for their physical and mental health. Plus, if I'm doing my job right the next generation is better than the last. I do occasionally need to do a test breeding to sus out health or genetic anomalies that we encounter in a first litter.
In this case, I was hoping to both get my beige girl and see if I can replicate the beautiful temperament of her first litter if I paired her with a different buck.

Babies part 2!

I'm sure the algorithm will hate my multiple posts today but oh well!

Auntie Sam's hand makes an appearance in some of these. The babies love Auntie Sam!
Also, you can see the difference in coat texture between the rex and velveteen babies. The rex babies have some wild wires hairs but don't have the plush look of the velveteen. I'm hoping to improve coat quality over time but my main focuse right now is improving immunes systems/uri sensitivity and breeding in more solid temperament and confidence.

Some babies for you!
Instagram limits me to 20 pictures ( how dare)
More to follow
Most of the solids/Irish are from Abby's litter (velveteen line)
The rest are the varigated line and are either standard coats or rex and are a few days younger than the rest.

These handsome kids are just the sweetest. I wish you could squish them through the screen.

We take a break from our regularly scheduled programming to introduce Miss Beans.
Miss Beans is an emergency rescue intake who was adopted to a family while carrying hidden precious cargo. When they realized she had baby beans in her belly they asked for help. Well, beans had her beans mere hours before arriving here. She's settling in well and while Miss Beans is only a baby herself (we estimate her to be no more than 12 weeks), he baby beans are looking well fed and we think she should recover just fine from her teenage pregnancy.

Beans and babies will be available for adoption once ready. Once they they are through quarantine and old enough to be seperated they will be bonded with our current litters so that they can find homes together.

This should also mean we will be dipping into our reserve waitlist so look out for email communication in a few weeks if you are on the notify list.
